Some CD's get 5 stars that don't deserve it. This is NOT one of those. It's definitely one to cherish.

There is little more one could ask for in these buoyant, dramatic, glowing and felicitous performances by cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy. They simply take off because of their marvelously unforced style of play, which at various moments can be commanding, poetic and even aristocratic. Both soloists also manifest an extremely satisfying instrumental tone, especially Harrell, whose cello sounds absolutely golden, and who frequently demonstrates the ability to truly sing and soar. And with Ashkenazy's wonderfully fluid approach, the two offer readings that, for me, outdo Rostropovich/Richter and Tortelier/Heidsieck, who both present fine offerings. Though Rostropovich possesses that wonderful, big sounding tone, in these sonatas he tends ... Read More:

My favourite Beethoven Cello Sonatas include: Fournier, Tortelier, Rostropovich and Casals.

I like Fournier, and I like Kempff even better. Kempff is all the more attractive when he is playing chamber music. Prior to this, Fournier had also recorded these sonatas with Schnabel but the recording was historic. He also recorded them with Gulda, but it was not a great success, and the result: Gulda recognised Fournier as his superior, but he refused to record these sonatas again, not even with Lynn Harrell despite the latter's repeated invitations.

I also like Tortelier, but the pianist Heisdieck, a strange mixture of Schnabel and Cortot, was rather erratic. He was certainly no Schnabel nor Cortot.

There are quite a lot of Rostropovich's ... Read More:

This is an amazing album: four amazing works played with such passion and communication by Du Pre. This is my first exposure to Du Pre, and she's magnificent. The Elgar is amazing, but my favourite cd is the second with the two Beethoven works on it, which have become two of my favourite works after hearing them here! Such a satisfying cd - one of those desert island cds for classical lovers, i think.

During a certain moment in Solti's Rheingold one can hear the distinct sound of the ice machine in the lobby (I checked the score and Wagner makes no mention of it anywhere although Strauss called for one in Don Quixote). At one perilous instant in a Kabasta Bruckner recording we can dimly make out the detonation of a 100 pound bomb off in the distance somewhere in wartime Munich (and, worse, you can hear Nazis coughing!). People should be prepared for the problems inherent in live recordings and be willing to put up with them in order to hear fine spontanous performances. One should think of them as sort of like, well, being at a live concert for real. The late Ms. du Pre's playing is so ear-catching I'd be willing to put up with a recording of her performing in a rail ... Read More:

Literally out of this world. It was Richter's take on Concerto Number 2 here that was placed on Voyager's Golden Record and hurled into outer space, hopefully to be found by extra-terrestrials, and seen (heard) as an example of the best the human race has to offer. Quite an honour. If you watched the X Files series you heard Richter-Bach's Number 2 on the first show of Season 2 - Little Green Men. If you can recall that episode you may also recall how jubilant and full of glory that Brandenburg was. Well, this whole record is like that, full of juice, full of joy, full of sound. No valveless trumpets blatting here, no thin strings. Rich and complete - nothing else like it out there anymore (though Marriner is good). It'll be out in space long after you and I are dead and gone - it ... Read More:
