This recording pairs two concerti that, despite the obvious differences in tonal language, have much in common: both are large-scale, impassioned and, at times, achingly lyrical works that require technical mastery and musical maturity from both soloist and orchestra.
As far as the Schoenberg goes, Hahn and Salonen meet these challenges unabashedly; it is the most well-controlled yet lyrical recording of this sadly underplayed masterpiece I know. Schoenberg's musical language--so difficult for so many listeners--is brought to life with remarkable clarity and, more importantly, treated with a lovely musicality that sings out the Romantic beauty of the work.
However, while Schoenberg's lyricism generally reveals itself in shorter ... Read More:

For those not wanting the entire Cinderella ballet, the "suites," or highlights, derived by Prokofiev from Acts 1-3 will fill the gap nicely, and so will this superb recording. First released by EMI in 1983, then 1987, and generated now to this 1992 reissue, the decision to maintain Previn's account is a wise one. The conductor's grasp on the music is undeniably persuasive and hypnotic, obvious at once from the heartfelt Introduction, and never fails to garner delight by its fresh immediacy, attention to piquant orchestration and detail, and genuine sense of atmosphere. This is, easily, Prokofiev at his most nostalgic, vulnerable and alluringly melancholy. As the episodes unfold, under Previn, each becomes a marvelous individual "sound picture," yet a distinct ... I got goose-pimple-bones every time I listen to this CD. There no better recordings of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice existing. Yo can not compare the voice of Derek Lee Ragin to other countertenors. He is just the best.

Each one of these volumes of the Mozart Effect is supposed to have a special effect on you. I don't know if it does. I know they are all very relaxing, and the music is beautiful.

Composers have a tendency it seems to write one violin concerto (which becomes one of their best works). Stravinsky and Schoenberg are no exceptions to this. Schoenberg's concerto, he once bragged, would require a six fingered violinist. Michael Erxleben proves him to be very wrong. The performance he gives on these pieces is absolutely top notch - full of expressivity and, of course, virtuosity (duh). This is an album you must add to your collection - wonderful performances of two monumental 20th century works.
