This recording pairs two concerti that, despite the obvious differences in tonal language, have much in common: both are large-scale, impassioned and, at times, achingly lyrical works that require technical mastery and musical maturity from both soloist and orchestra.
As far as the Schoenberg goes, Hahn and Salonen meet these challenges unabashedly; it is the most well-controlled yet lyrical recording of this sadly underplayed masterpiece I know. Schoenberg's musical language--so difficult for so many listeners--is brought to life with remarkable clarity and, more importantly, treated with a lovely musicality that sings out the Romantic beauty of the work.
However, while Schoenberg's lyricism generally reveals itself in shorter ... Read More:

I recently purchased this set of Beethoven's string quartets, and I must say that aside from its more detailed sound, it shares many of the shortcomings of the set recorded by the Vegh in the early 70's. Contrary to what Mr. Davis implies, this set does not use consistently slightly faster tempos. Indeed the tempos are at times slower in both slow and fast movements than the 70's set. The Vegh is, at times, even more strained and lifeless in these performances than they were in those of the 70's.
The Penguin Guide has sung the praises of the Vegh performances for years and seems to abhor performances of vitality, perfection, and exquisite beauty. It therefore chides the Cleveland Quartet for being shallow because of its "impeccable technical ... Read More:

While I don't own this collection, I have access to it through a library. At 87 CDs, it's hard to know where to start. I started at the beginning, and have been enjoying it immensely. I started by going through the nine symphonies, all conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Now, I've heard many versions of the nine symphonies, and I've heard some pretty crappy renditions. This isn't one of them. This is a top-quality recording of Beethoven's greatest legacy.
I have to admit listening to the next few volumes somewhat absentmindedly, not giving serious attention to it until I got to the 32 piano sonatas, which are arguably the heart of the collection. As a pianist myself, I've chugged through plenty of these sonatas, and I've listened to dozens of ... Read More:

Anybody who gives this collection an overall poor review does not have an ear for music. That simple. I went into a state of ecstasy listening to this. Petersen quartet is unbelievable too, but they don't have a full Beethoven String Quartet recording out. I was hoping too find a full set like this one.
The Emerson Quartet just being technical and showy and not musical. COME ON!! Listen to their version of The Art of Fugue. Also an absolutely phenomenal recording - perfect on every level it could be judged by.

I just got through listening to this concerto and I am amazed by Mutter's complete attack and beautiful playing on this violin concerto. I will shamelessly admit that I am partial to her playing. I own quite a bit of her renditions and always find she has something new and refreshing to add to the music. Even the pieces which have gold standards set by other fine violinists; such as Heifitz playing Bruch's violin concerto (how can you beat that?). Still, I enjoy hearing her interpretations. She has reached a level that leaves me in awe and I wish I could play like that!
