Hillbilly Jazz

CD-Charts > Music > Western Swing
by: Vassar Clements

Release Date September 29, 1992
During the '70's, fiddlin' Vassar Clements was in such high demand as a side man that it was damned near impossible to purchase an album that did NOT feature his remarkable playing. In addition to his key roles in ground breaking efforts such as "Will the Circle be Unbroken" and "Old and in the Way", Vassar made the rounds among such disparate pop stars as Paul McCartney, Elvin Bishop, and Dickie Betts - and put out some product of his own, as well.

"Hillbilly Jazz" mostly features the Bob Wills/Texas swing side of Vassar's playing, ably assisted by a strong backup group featuring David Bromberg on acoustic and slide guitars and some great pedal steel work by Doug Jerrigan. In addition to covering the ... Read More:

Swingin' On The Strings

CD-Charts > Music > Western Swing
by: Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant

Release Date March 09, 1999
Without hyperbole, "Swingin' On The Strings" contains some of the greatest music ever recorded. Apart, they were just two studio musicians. Together, they created interstellar magic. Jimmy and Speedy - electric guitar and steel guitar - these guys shared the same musical consciousness on a cosmic level. Always cerebral, the compositions are stirring and the improvisation is spellbinding. This is perfect music. This has it all regardless of where you're coming from as a listener: country, jamband, jazz, instrumental enthusiast, etc. This disc should especially appeal to those coming from the Junior Brown camp. This is on an equal footing with its predecessor "Stratosphere Boogie" given the mind melting races, medium-tempo waltzes and relaxed ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Hooves of the Horses

Hooves of the Horses

CD-Charts > Music > Western Swing
by: Wylie & the Wild West

Release Date June 15, 2004
Wylie Gustafson's return to rural living in the mid-90s continues to pay dividends in his music. Bred in Montana, Gustafson's act was born of the California scene and tempered by a stretch in Nashville. But years of Eastern Washington ranching and horsemanship has taken his Western-themed music to a more sacred level. He takes a page from the book of Marty Robbins, not only with sweet Western ballads like "Hooves of the Horses" and Mexicali-flavored tunes like "Manolito," but with variety that includes the slinky blue "Leather Lover" and a jazz tinged cover of Bob Nolan's "I Grab My Saddle Horn and Blow."

Covers of Buddy Holly ("Everyday"), Johnny Cash ("Luther Played the Boogie"), ... Read More:

by: Asleep at the Wheel

Release Date September 12, 2000
As a kid, I was into rock & pop, which is now called "Classic Rock", back in the 70's. I was scanning the radio tuner and came upon ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL's [then] current hit "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read" and was stunned at how incredibly great this narrated & theatrical country weeper sounded. Not long after, another "hit", "Nothing Takes The Place Of You", featuring the great AATW vocalist CHRIS O'CONNELL stormed up the charts and it was a bluesy gem of a performance to behold. The real Chris O'Connell radio hit stunner followed in succession up the charts with her classic performance of "THE BUMP BOUNCE BOOGIE", a toe-tappin' mover and shakin' swing number which would no doubt turn the Andrews Sisters(1940s pop superstars) green with envy. I've ... Read More:

The Essential Marty Robbins: 1951-1982

CD-Charts > Music > Western Swing
by: Marty Robbins

Release Date December 09, 1991
With the exception of Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, and Johnny Cash, no other Country artist had as big an impact on the more lucrative Billboard Pop singles charts than Marty Robbins, as no less than 24 times did he crack the Top/Hot 100, with another eleven just missing by making the "bubbling under" charts. And among that 24, four were Hot 100 hits only as Cap & Gown [# 45 in 1959], Is There Any Chance? and Ballad Of The Alamo [# 31 and # 34 respectively in 1960], and I Told The Brook [# 81 in 1962] did not make the Country charts.

He had, to his credit, SIXTEEN # 1 Country hits, beginning with his very first for Columbia way back in 1952 [I'll Go On Alone] and ending in 1976 with Among My Souvenirs. Both are in this box set. In addition, he had 78 ... Read More:
