I bought this CD, and also another, to gather most of the older, and his later too, songs which caused me to become a Marty Robbins fan, per se'... I like the western trilogy songs like El Paso and Faleena, etc., but really enjoy the songs such as Honky Tonk Man and Some Memories, etc., as well... And who could forget Padre... Just another purchase I made to which I was very happy with... Thanks!

Fantastic fun swang rock.These guys were the hilt in the day.I saw them live in Phoenix,Arizona about 1979 and they tore the place up and left everyone just devastated and ripped.Most people had to crawl out of there.I have seen over 50 groups in the late 70's early 80's and by far these guys put on the best show I have ever seen.If your a trucker over 50 , you probably should buy this.If you are younger...sorry ...you missed out on history but thanks to Amazon,here is a piece of it.Enjoy ! !

This album is a terrific one from before most of you, well, were. Don't let that keep you from enjoying the finely crafted musicianship and intelligent lyrics (well, most of them). As for buying on Amazon, watch out: they default you to buy two copies without warning you. Wanna bet that they leave that out of the review? As a result, I'm not buying here again unless in dire circumstances.

Mama's Hungry Eyes: A Tribute to Merle Haggard

Virtually all tribute albums featuring other artists recroding songs made famous by the recipient of the tribute contain at least one dud and a couple of near duds. That is not the case with Mama's Hungry Eyes, which is the reason I rank it as the greatest tribute album. In fact, a couple (used in the country colloquial to mean any number from 2 to 4) of the versions here I prefer over Merle's, and a couple more I rate as fully equal with Merle's.

Brooks and Dunn provide a rousing, rocked-up version of 'Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down.' I am not the biggest fan of the duo, but I say this song is better than at least half of those on the duo's pair of Greatest Hits albums. HOT, HOT, HOT!!! One of the best instumental albums you'll ever hear. Inventive, creative, original. As Jimmy's son points out, he was Leo's torchbearer with the tele. According to George Fullerton, Mr. Fender's right-hand man, he and Leo were at a club in Riverside, CA, looking for guitarists to "test drive" this new invention. During a set break they approached Jimmy, who took it, sat on the edge of the stage and began picking. As George related the story, all in attendance stopped what they were doing, gathered around and watched Bryant pick away. It, I'm sure, was an historic moment.

Thankfully, the combination of Mr. Bryant and Mr. Fender's invention can be heard in its purist form. Teamed up with Speedy (and that name is accurate) ... Read More:

btw: First review here I read said something about the "rhythm section bein' a bit stiff?" I've owned the CD for 8 years, and I've never heard anything remotely 'stiff' (nor has anyone else who has heard my copy). So, ignore that remark. Check out the samples here at Amazon for yourself. (I also collect and webcast 'swing' - if you have to pat your foot to it, it swings. And this is a foot-tappin' CD).

THIS IS A FOUR CD BOX SET WITH INFORMATIVE BOOKLETS IN EACH CD WITH LOTS OF PICTURES AND BIOGRAPHICAL INFO. ADMITTEDEDLY, THE EARLIEST STUFF DOESN'T QUITE "SWING" AS MUCH AS THE LATER RECORDINGS, BUT THE MUSIC IS STILL GREAT AND IT IS INTERESTING TO HEAR HOW THE MUSIC EVOLVES OVER TIME. A BARGAIN PRICE, I HAVE A FEW BOX SETS IN THIS SERIES (THE PROPPER LABEL) AND THEY ARE ALL FANTASTIC PRODUCTIONS AND VALUES.
