While the California-based Arhoolie label has long done right by the Maddoxes and their seminal 1947 to 1951 recordings for 4 Star, the group's later Columbia recordings (1952-1957) have been far harder to come by, the only CD collection up until now being a semi-bootleg European import entitled "The Hillbilly Boogie Years." Fortunately, Bear Family has stepped up to the plate with this superb collection, collecting not only the group's entire output for Columbia, but also Rose Maddox's complete solo Columbia sessions, including her brief pairing with sister-in-law Retta Maddox as Rose and Retta. While collectors have long tended to gravitate towards the group's 4 Star recordings because of their sheer wildness, the act was ... Read More:

This cd has all the charted top 40ty hits unfortunatly it suffers from sloppy mastering the beguing of "Sway With Me" is missing as is the ending of "Rip It Up" but this version is the one heard in the movie "Don't Knock The Rock" has the ending mising too it might have been released that way in England the sound is excelent and I would recomend this collection I would recomend getting this along with the movies "Rock Around The Clock" and "Don't Knock The Rock " also the earlier hits collection 51-54 and a live album "still Rocking Around The Clock" an BMG it is a reisue of a concert from 1971? that was originaly released on the Kamma Sutra label although they have the tracks out of order Bill was one of the true pioneers of rock and ... Willie and Ray sound incredible together. This record goes to show that some voices don't grow old but just mellow and develop different personalities.

If your knowledge of western swing starts at Big Sandy & stops at Bob Wills, you're off to a good start but you've got more to go. Along with the amazing Milton Brown & The Light Crust Doughboys, you've got Ocie Stockard and The Wanderers, surely my new favorite! With many of Milton Brown's boys backing him up the stand out musician is Harry Palmer. A trumpeter & vocalist with sure traces of Louis Armstrong in his horn & Jack Teagarden in his voice, this is his only session recorded & it is a bold session at that! His contribution to the first 14 tracks on this cd from 1937 contain more jazz than some players ever get across. His stand out track is Black & Blues (a thinly veiled 'What Did I Do To Be So Black & Blue') with his ... Read More:

I found this box set a considerable disappointment. Big step down from Proper's previous superb Western Swing anthology: Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys: the Golden Age of Western Swing. A few good pieces but for most part both songs and playing are undistinguished. They might be hard to find, but perhaps there is an obvious reason for this obscurity. Also, as a previous reviewer has noted, many of songs are Western Swing only by broadest possible definition of term.
This is the fourth 4 CD set of Western Swing music Proper has put out (besides Doughboys, etc. the other two showcase Bob Wills and Milton Brown). Could be by now bottom of barrel is being scraped. In any case, the result here is ordinary music. Don't invest your money in ... Read More:

Haven't yet actually heard this CD edition, but I'm thrilled to see so much of Little Jimmy Boyd's music made available again! It's going on my Wish List...
Having said that, sorry - - but it's just not the 'best of' if it doesn't include 'God Bless Us All' or his completely brilliant proto-rockabilly '(I've Got Those Wake Up 7:30 Wash Your Ears They're Dirty Eat Your Eggs And Oatmeal Rush To School) Blues'.

Enjoyed the music. Great fiddle swing music, and I couldn't believe he could play that fast on one of the songs. Good dance music.
