Hag At His Best between 1969-1976 on capital. A Six CD set (Don't be fooled when you open the box CD 5 and 6 are together in the last case). This includes a lot of great songs I had trouble finding including "Old Man From The Mountain, Movin' On, Jesus,Take A Hold,Cherokee Maiden, Here Comes The Freedom Train. It also includes a hard cover book which recounts the 8 year period. I may be Wrong but the first couple of CD's which were recorded at the capital studios seem to have slightly more ground hiss than the later ones (nothing that would deter me from recomending this though but it should be noted). I love Merle and if you've sought for more than the usual compilation look no further!

This is one of the few country artists my wife really likes also. Lee Roy does it all very well. A true talent. I think this is the best of his albums. And there are some others that are very good.

This is 100% pure traditional western swing, wit ha slightly modern theme. The lyrics have been updated to fit todays lifestyles, even though the music sounds from the early 50's western swing period, the words speak to the audiences of today, you can relate to the music! It's simply brilliant. Sandy's vocal are amazing, his smoooth singing is like velvet, the Mel Torme of western swing. Great music, greta original songs, and yet it all sounnds so vintage. A purrfect cd to cruise around in your hotrod with!

I always thought that the modern purveyors of cowboy music began and ended with Riders In the Sky, and then I got introduced to Wylie (Gustafson) & The Wild West. These guys are the real deal! [In fact, Ranger Doug duets with Wylie on "Sage and Sand"--which they co-wrote.] And these are mostly originals. The only other non-original is their playful take on the traditional "Buffalo Gals." If you draw a straight line from Gene Autry to Roy Rogers to Riders In the Sky, it will lead directly to Wylie & the Wild West. They respect the tradition without resorting to being campy. Yee-Haw! Sid King and The Five Strings are one of the many amazing acts to come out of Texas in the 1950s (others being Long John Hunter, Johnny Carroll, David Ray, Bob Luman, etc). I'm not going to call him a model rockabilly because rockabilly is a specialist or "ghetto-monger's" term, like "punk" etc. These guys generate rock and roll in its rough, passionate purity. Like Johnny Burnette. This disc is essential - and, like everything put out by Bear Family (one of the many European companies who bought up American music and sold it back to us), high quality.

The songs are very kid friendly, and enjoyable for adults too. Our three year old was learning the words after hearing the songs only once. (ie: banana phone and apples and bananas) And, if Allison Krauss's Blessed Be doesn't make you get goose bumps, hug your children, and promise to be the best parent possible...there is something wrong with you : ) Truly a beautiful song. The songs are upbeat and fun, without sounding like "toddler music". We love this CD.
