Chi Town's own Da Brat created a scene with FunkDaFied in 1994. The album is fully loaded with mid 90's G-Funk jams that ah get your head noddin. Jermaine Dupri's production here is top notch, and Da Brat's lyrical ability is evident. She can flow tight, and even though her lyrics may not be the deepest, she really knows how to get the partay jumpin'. Interestingly, Some of her catch phrases may bring to mind Snoop Doggy Dogg. The title track, and "Fa All Y'all," got mad radio play back in '94 and early '95, but the album has much more to offer. She has sass, and she proves she is as tough as the next male MC, and she can hang. All in all, a dope, if slept on, release.

I absolutely LOOOOOVVVVVEEEE this collection! It takes me back to when hip-hop was REALLY hip-hop. We use to stand around and watch boys break dance on the cardboard boxes listening to these jams on tapes!!!!! And every Sunday you could bet money that the DJ would play "Planet Rock" at the skating rink.
Sit back and share the sounds with some friends because you can't listen to this collection without having the desire to say to some friends,"You remember when........"

I admit it took a long time for me to really get into "Innercity Griots," but after a few months of sporadic listening, I was glad I took the time. It didn't impress me at all upon my first few listens, but it grew on me once I began to appreciate the Freestyle Fellowship. In 1993, the LA crew of Mikah 9, P.E.A.C.E., Aceyalone, Self Jupiter, DJ Kiilu and producer J-Sumbi bring a whole lot to the table, and most of it is beyond the surface. Many of Freestyle Fellowship's rhymes are, indeed, freestyles. It's hard to characterize them; they're artistic, conscious, humorous, clever, and immensely talented. Each rapper is distinctive and incredible in his own right, and putting them all together is pretty amazing. Aceyalone stands out as the lyrical wizard, ... Read More:

MC Ren comes back for his fourth album just 2 years after The Villain In Black. Unfortunately, this is the only album of his I have as of Mar. 2007. But I gotta say it knocks all the way thru. Ren still kicks those tales of his Compton set just like he did with NWA. Even though he reps CPT to the fullest, the beats are just as Bay Area, and even Down South, as they are LA. Ant Banks laces fire on "N---a Called Ren," and "All The Same" with those melodic space boogie beats he's well known for. T-Mixx, of Suave House fame in Texas and Memphis creates heat on 3 songs (1/4 the album!): 1)"Who In The F---" (f/ 8Ball/MJG), 2)"Voyage To Compton"(what an awesome laid-back G-Funk smoker), and 3) "Must Be High." All Three slap with that down south funk flava. LT Hutton, Young ... Read More:

Warren G has always been and will always be among my favorite hip hop artists, one of the West Coast's most ingenious producing minds. His 2001 album "The Return of the Regulator" is his weakest effort, but one that's still worth a listen for his fans in my mind. This album succeeds in most of the areas that his earlier efforts do, but fails in a few notable areas. His first three albums, 1994's classic Regulate...G Funk Era, 1997's Take a Look Over Your Shoulder, and 1999's I Want It All were all marked by his wonderful production, his signature g-funk sound with rich instrumentation, laidback vibes and a soulful, slow-rolling feel that evoked images of his sunny California home. On "The Return of the Regulator," the sound is a little different, adjusting to the evolving West Coast sound ... Read More:

This is a good album because it has some of the elite rappers in the game today. When this trio gets together for a single or a cd like this, u know its gonna be hot. Some of my favorite joints on this cd are 213 Tha Gangsta Clicc because Nate Dogg goes beyond just singing into a rap style that is off the hook, Joysticc is a great sexual song (gotta have some of those on there), and So Fly is a great single that was released about 10 months before the cd was even released. Groupie Luv is also a single with a music video which is an ok song. Overall, I give this album 3 1/2 bricketts.

I've owned this album since its release. I have tried time and time again to get into this album, and have never been able to get into it. As a big fan of "Third Eye Vision," I was ready for something just as raw. This album did not deliver. It's like an insta-hip hop kit, and that's not a good thing. Really, most of Third Eye Vision was in the same vein, but while it at times came off as trite it had a rawness that was undeniable. Hieroglyphics comes on this album without that rawness. They almost have a clean R&B, Black Eyed Peas sound on this album and it kills what is so beautiful about the group. This album really fails to stand out in any interesting way. If they're not going to reinvent their sound effectively, a rehash of their first album would have at least had some room to be enjoyable. ... Read More:

Once again, where are the ladies on this album? This is a great release but they missed a lot of songs. How can you say this is a jam release when you forgot Domino's Ghetto Jam?, Today Was a Good Day by Ice Cube, My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me by Getto Boys, Call Me On the Under- D-Shot, Regulate- Warren G., Get Jiggy Wit It- Will Smith, Hurricane-The Click, Gin and Juice- Snoop. My Type of Hype- Full Force. Anything by Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim and P.Diddy. Come on! THESE WERE MAJOR HITS COMPLETELY MISSED! Whoever put this album together should have paid more attention because they missed a load of hits. And once again, forgot about the females. Why must the females always be ignored?
