Mozart: Don Giovanni

CD-Charts > Music > Voices
from: Sony

Release Date August 23, 1994
This is a superlative 'Don Giovanni' and one of my favorite live opera recordings -- though, for that reason, it might not be your first choice. Or could it? Mitropoulos is stunning throughout: he takes over where Furtwangler left off, and leads the Wiener Philharmoniker with admirable finesse and showmanship. The cast is one of the finest ever assembled, rivaled only by Giulini's crew for EMI. This 1956 performance was a magical night of the golden age of European opera, preserved here for anyone who loves exceptional Mozart singing. Essential.

Siepi isn't my favorite Don (he isn't my favorite Figaro, either), but I daresay nobody knows this opera or the title role better than he. His famously masculine, excessively brash ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Fritz Kreisler & Sergei Rachmaninoff: Sonatas By Beethoven, Grieg & Schubert

Fritz Kreisler & Sergei Rachmaninoff: Sonatas By Beethoven, Grieg & Schubert

CD-Charts > Music > Voices
from: RCA

Release Date January 14, 1997
These are probably some of Kreisler's best recordings. Unlikely pair with Rachmaninoff turned out to be a most happy one. Kreisler's vivacious, sunny quality blends beautifully with Rachmaninoff's robust, slavonic piano playing. Their recording of Beethoven #8 is lively and full of charm. The second movement (notoriously difficult movement to find the right tempo) is played with melting Viennese charm. The outer movements are dashing and Kreisler's magnificient trills are evident throughout. It is a performance that has never really been matched (Kreisler's later version with Franz Rupp was good, but not quite as well). Schubert is also excellent and only equalled by Arthur Grumiaux in the 1970's with Paul Crossley (yes, equalled, but ... Read More:
