I just happened upon this set of reviews on Amazon (although I had reviewed the original SOB separately years ago), and was delighted at the multitude of very favorable reviews by others. But then came the weeds amongst the fruit, namely those few reviews by people who just did not 'get it'. The Amazon 'editorial reviewer' should get an award for the most ignorant and condescending review ever given a classical album...."wacky and goofy" indeed...what a fool. Then there was a review that dismissed the entire set of recordings because the music was 'mechanical'. My God, Carlos' performances are anything BUT mechanical...the main reasons that Wendy's performances outshine the competition are that she skillfully orchestrated the original music ... Read More:

Susan Graham is an incredible artist and
this is one of my favorite of her CDs.

Hearing her in person is even better; her musicality,
her diction, her style, her physical appearance on stage,
add to the sheer beauty of her voice. The one time I heard
her in person, I was stunned.
The recital was as close to perfection as one can get.

I highly recommend this CD and any other CD of Susan Graham.

This is an Oratorio not an opera. It was written to be performed in concert but it would make an excellent operatic production. The story is a good one and the passions it explores are timeless. The music in this piece, even though it was set to English, is well suited to the bel canto style of singing preferred for Italian opera. And that's fine. The definition of the term 'bel canto' stems from the idea of singing beautifully and lyrically in Italian.

The cast in this performance all have voices made to order for bel canto singing. Rosemary Joshua, Richard Croft and Hilary Summers stand head and shoulders above the rest. I got this Cd from a music store two years ago, and I have to say that it was absolutely beautiful. Every song and aria is nice to listen to. I've been listening to this Cd ever since I got it at the store, and it was nice, because it changed my life forever. When I listened to this Cd, I knew I would be surprised, and I was surprised at how great the Cd was. I thought this wasn't Opera singing, but I found that out very clearly. Highly recommended.

BRAHMS: Edition - Complete Works

A wonderful CD collection indeed! I have bought all of the Brilliant Classics Complete Collections and have not been upset with any set. The only thing I didn't like about this set (and only because I can compare with my others), the information was on the outside instead of the inside. Meaning that all of the works were located on the outside box instead of on the flap like Mozart, Beethoven and Bach.

The set is much more colorful than the last couple also. You can see how much time they spend on making it look "brilliant". Definitely a wonderful deal for the price... and you should not even give it a second thought.

Bernstein Century - Symphony No. 1 "Jeremiah" & Symphony No. 2 "The Age of Anxiety"

After winning the Pulitzer Prize for his "Jeremiah" Sym., Bernstein remained in top form as a composer throughout the late Forties and Fifties. His 'Age of Anxiety' Sym. #2 is refeshingly jazzy, and Philippe Entremont plays as if to the manner born in the long piano solos. Both of LB's other symphonies capture a specifically Jewish-Biblical significance that meant much to the composer but hasn't worn well. The Age of Anxiety is more like his Ballet Fancy Free, a comment, wry and often witty, on modern city life. It captures Auden's mournful sophistication perfectly, even if you haven't read the poem that inspired the music.

I never tire of listening to this CD. Lovely and enchanting. Includes a booklet with all the words if you want follow each song closely.
