I always considered Ray Charles a blues singer, and still
do, but his voice and style compliment jazz artist Betty
Walker's on this album to a T. I love their rendition of "Alone
Together" and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" is excellent.
If you want to hear Ray Charles at his softest, get this album. The only criticism I have is there is too much accompaniment by the orchestra and back-up singers.

A Swingin' Affair, along with Songs for Swingin' Lovers which preceded it are in my opinion the 2 best up tempo albums Sinatra recorded, the pinnacle of his big band style recordings during his Capitol period. The Nelson Riddle arrangements and orchestrations are first rate. "Night and Day" begins the album with a brassy intro and sets the pattern. The characteristic interplay between brass and strings, a Riddle trademark, is well demonstrated. Other recognizable elements found in the tracks include Harry "Sweets" Edison's trumpet flourishes and Bill Miller's tinkling piano. Sinatra and Riddle flawlessly move from track to track. While swinging, the tempos are relaxed. The blusey "No One Ever Tells You" and "I've Got It Bad" are up tempo ballads. ... Read More:

1988 Summer Olympics Album: One Moment in Time

This album is one of the best from the late 80's. I mean that's when the Olympics still meant something. Something changed with this world in the 90's and it went to hell in a handbasket. I mean you hardly ever hear of an Olympic album nowdays. "One Moment In Time" is a song that everyone can relate too. We all have had our one moment in time or we will have eventually. I was starting college back in Oklahoma in the late summer of 1988 when this album was released and it takes me wayyyyyyy back to a better time. Also, something a lot of people don't know about the song "Indestructible" by the Four Tops, is that this song was played at the end of the 1988 movie "Alien Nation". It's been said that, back in his heyday, being championed by Johnny Carson was the key to major stardom . Certainly, that was the case with Bette Midler , to say nothing of any number of up and coming comics, such as Jay Leno himself, for whom an appearance on the TONIGHT SHOW was the Key to the Komic Kingdom. But those were outsized, often outrageous personalities. For an introspective, genuinely low-key singer-songwriter like Kenny Rankin, however, becoming a favorite of the legendary late night-- talkmeister -and appearing on the program 20 times in a three year period--proved to be something less than a major breakthrough.
