What else can be said, particularly the GI's who had it right, what memories Jo left with us to furthermore remember our romantic past!
Release Date November 05, 1996
I really like this CD because it had all the cuts I really wanted. She has a sweet, strong and unique voice. I love "Imagine" but it's a great song in itself, she doesn't add anything spectacular to it. "Rio de Janeiro Blues" is also one of my favs on the CD. If you love her voice, it's reason enough to buy this CD. Nothing especially memorable or outstanding, just a good CD.

All of these songs are wonderful, but ... when will Capitol finally reissue Frank's great soundtrack albums from the '50s, namely "High Society," "Pal Joey," and "Can-Can"? We get bits and pieces of them in collections like this, but they deserve to appear in complete form, with 24-bit remastering. "Pal Joey" is especially great. Yet the only CD containing all five FS songs from that album -- the ones recorded with Nelson Riddle in the Capitol studios, not the inferior Columbia sound stage versions heard in the movie -- is the out-of-print "Sinatra Sings the Select Rogers and Hart." C'mon, Capitol. Why keep recycling the same stuff when you've still got some prime cuts sitting in the vaults?

I have had this before and misplaced it and missed it enough to buy it again. The CD arrived in perfect condition and I am already enjoying it.
Thanks so much /watch-out I sing along when I drive.

Along with 'Lady in Autumn' this is probably the best compilation of Billie Holiday's work. Superbly remastered, it is arguably the finest representation of jazz singing in this period EXCEPT for Lady's other recordings during this time. The reason for this is not only Billie Holiday's extraordinary sound (which defined jazz singing with each note), but the quality of the musicians who accompanied her. Many of these sessions were led by Teddy Wilson (the leader with whom she is most closely associated during this period), who led on nearly half of the selections on this CD, and features legends like Ben Webster, Lester Young, and Buck Clayton.
The songs are of a higher quality than many of the pieces Holiday was given to record during her earliest recording ... Read More:

If you are not already a fan of Diana Krall, this is a horrible record (yes, and I even remember playing 78's)to start an association. It is essentially the Thunder Bay Jazz quartet with (in extremely small letters) Diana Krall on vocals. And, there are very limited vocals, even in the songs where she actually sings a few words. She appears to be a wonderful Jazz pianist, but, it is not evident from the cover of the album that this is going to be a showcase of her non-vocal skills, and so the number and length of the instrumentals is startling. Virtually all the songs with vocals are up-beat, up-tempo, and in many cases cutesy. So much so, that I began to wonder if some were chosen from an Alvin and the Chipmunks album. Finally, and most damning to me is the fact that she seems ... Read More:

I didn't discover this talented musician (Anita O'Day) until about a week or two before her unfortunate death at age 87. Her unique sound (I think which reminisces at times Judy Garland territory, but that's just a personal opinion), uncanny scatting abilities and amazing sense of swing engaged me enough to dig into her long musical legacy--and, since I adored her take on Miles Davis' "Four" after hearing it, I knew this was the CD to start out with (since it features "Four" as the, of course, fourth track), and it is indeed great. This re-release features the original set list from the first printing of Anita O'Day Sings the Winners and much more. "Four" happens to be my favorite song here and O'Day gives a tremendous performance with some brilliantly written lyrics (see album insert ... Read More:

The only thing more incredible than the initial reluctance of recording companies to accept this self-produced album and promote it is the music itself. As crowded as the present-day jazz vocal field has become, at least relative to the numbers of "competent" listeners, this Italian exponent of an American art form sets a new standard, following the lead of Ella and Sarah and raising the bar even higher. We've heard some extraordinary, pyrotechnical yet free-swinging performances in recent years from Ann Hampton Callaway, Karrin Allyson, Cheryl Bentyne, Diane Shuur and Kurt Elling (especially his two epic transcriptions of Dexter Gordon improvisations, "Tanya" and "Body and Soul") not to mention some earlier dazzling musical legerdemain by the British pop-jazz coloratura, Cleo Laine. But ... Read More:
