...this would be one of the 5 CDs I'd take with me out of the 700+ I own. This is standards jazz at its greatest. It not only features two of the best and most iconic jazz vocal interpreters of all time, but also people like Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Herb Ellis as the swinging and relaxed musicians, with Armstrong on the trumpet, of course. Jazz takes many forms as it evolves, but this is the sweet, plain vanilla flavor that never goes out of style. The joy that went into making it is palpable and you can see it just on the cover picture. This is great to play in any setting: car, home, dinner. A great introduction to anyone who is interested in learning about jazz.

Lea DeLaria is fabulous. An incredible performer with an enormous amount of talent, how she does it is anyone's guess. Personally, I think she's got a big black woman hidden underneath that peachy skin, because I've no idea how a 50-year old white girl could have so much soul and rhythm.

One of the most underrated jazz singers of our time, DeLaria's newest album, The Live Smoke Sessions, is also one of her most spirited. I think Frank's half-dozen or so "broken heart" LP's represent his highest quality work, and this one ranks just a hair below "In the Wee Small Hours" and "Only the Lonely." Of course, as a fan, I also like his six best "hat" albums, those bright and swinging affairs. But the subtle selling of these lovelorn lyrics, recordings in which his silences and his breathing are as vital to success as his enunciation of each word, is something to behold. I keep it one star below the two more famous efforts mentioned earlier because those songs, overall, seem more powerful to me. Wow! I haven't heard a more sophisticated arrangement of new and old songs in a long time. Rod Stewart be worried -- very worried!

One of the things that surprises me is the reaction from much younger listeners on this website who think that some "old" guy can't sing new songs. You say that you want the originals. Well, from this "old" gal, when I hear a re-make of an "old" song written from my generation and sung by somebody from your generation, you know, I have to feel the same way! I ask "What's wrong with the original?" It just shows, surprise!!!, that we both feel the same way.

This being said, I simply love the way Paul sings "It's My Life" for my generation. Yikes! Let's face it. No matter who sings it, it's a fantastic song. ... Read More:
