Kate McGarry's stunning new album, "If Less is More...Nothing is Everything," is an autumnal album for the new season, a sometimes harrowing, sometimes whimsical, sometimes thrilling collection of standards (Great American Songbook-era and rock-era alike) and originals. McGarry and her amazing ensemble start things off with a darkly knowing, timely interpretation of "Let's Face the Music." Although the classic Irving Berlin song was written as an acknowledgement of romantic transience ("there may be trouble ahead..."), here, with spooky, shimmering organ lines and McGarry's mournful vocal, it feels like nothing less than a harbinger of "last days." Call it "samba apocalyptica." This track along is well worth the price of admission (check out ... Read More:

This CD would have been perfection except for the inclusion of two songs by Betty Hutton (listening to her mangled version of IT HAD TO BE YOU is too painful for words) and the exclusion of Glenn Miller. Perhaps whoever put this collection together experienced a brief psychotic break. I can't think of any other reason why the off-key, over-the-top vocals of Betty Hutton would have been selected over Glenn Miller.

Great music. In fact, buy all three Lizz Wright cds (The Orchard, Dreaming Wide Awake, and Salt). You'll be glad you did. We listen to them often. Great jazz/soul music and a wonderful voice.

This CD is Rachelle Ferrell at her best. I love this CD. The way she uses her voice as an instument is fantastic. I loved it in the 90's when I first purchased it and I love it even more today. I've purchased this CD as gifts. It is absolutely fabulous.

Better this were titled "Peggy Lee's Biggest Sellers for Capitol." It represents none of her activity for Decca, when she established herself as a class jazz act in the '50s, it omits some of her best things for Capitol, pre- and post-Decca (including "The Shining Sea"), and it passes over her career 1971-1991. If I had to go with just one, it would be the British import, "The Best of Peggy Lee." And if her creative accomplishments mean as much to you as her "hits," the "Best of the Decca Years" is more satisfying.

If you are a true Dinah Washington fan, this is the one for you. It is an excellent collection of songs and well worth every penny spent. You will love this album.

Start with a phenomenally gifted, rapidly ascending vocalist of the same heritage as Caruso and Sinatra, add as the sole pianist the musician who is the current reigning patriarch in jazz, and finally select a few sterling examples from the Great American Songbook. The results are predictably spectacular but not "showy" or "exhibitionistic." This is not an album simply to be impressed by. Gambarini is sufficiently mature, and in command musically, that she can afford to use her virtually unlimited technique to one end: bringing the song to realization for all concerned--the composer, the performer, and the listener. Indeed, "You are there."
Anyone who finds this music "boring" hasn't learned how to listen. If you have yet to discover the ... Read More:

As a long-time fan of Kurt, I was hoping this album would continue his tradition of walking the innovative "tightrope" that defines the tradition of vocalese as pioneered by Eddie Jefferson, John Hendrix, and Mark Murphy. Instead I heard an entire album of moody crooning derived from his concerts dedicated to Johnny Hartman. I believe this album was recorded in an attempt to widen his commercial appeal - in that regard it appears to have succeeded. However, this was accomplished at the expense of abandoning the cutting-edge style of vocal jazz that brought him initial acclaim in Chicago. Hopefully, Kurt will come to his senses and return to the dynamic vocalese that played to packed crowds at the Green Mill.
