When I discussed the Ric Burns documentary about the old West with an Amerindian acquaintance, I complained that the film concentrated on the Lakota, to the exclusion of other peoples. My friend answered that, as the Lakota was the best known native American culture, that was a good place to start, and the audience would then move on to learn about other parts of the story.
I suppose the same is true of the documentary by Ric's brother Ken Burns, on the history of Jazz, on which this box set is based. It is heavy on Louis Armstrong and on the Big Band sound of the Swing era - probably the Jazz best known to the general public - but light in other areas, including the many, varied strands of Jazz in the last 30 years or so. There ... Read More:

Such a joy to listen to over and over again. His son and manager surely knows how to choose voices that blend and enhance his father's own voice, style and sharing thereof. Interviews with the vocalists who join Mr. Bennett on this CD express their admiration and joy in singing with and learning from him.
Can't quite express what a thrill it is to hear him teaching, challenging, and learning from these other artists who obviously are in such awe of the great Tony.

It is an amazing document of Sinatra in his environment. The sound quality is superior. It is a hall of fame arrangement and performance by Quincy Jones and the Count Basie Orchestra. Even the stage patter is classic. If you can't get the Vegas Box set, get this. If you have the Vegas Box set, get this.

This CD/DVD combo package is a concert that Michael Buble did for PBS a few years ago. He does a wonderful job singing classic jazz and pop standards. I also enjoyed his original song, Home, which he wrote. Michael is definitely a fresh of breath air in today's music scene.

The fact that Nina Simone is not a household name, like Sarah Vaughan, is inconceivable. She's a brilliant musician--terrific singer, Juilliard-trained classical pianist who accompanies herself no matter what the genre is, and composer, arranger, and consummate actress with a song. On this anthology of thirty-one of her best songs, she is at her peak, doing it all with panache and all but hanging her soul out to dry.
In "I Loves You, Porgy," one of the many favorites on this CD, Simone performs the definitive version of this song, keeping it simple with a simple piano, often singing almost a capella, and often in a whisper, creating an honest and very dramatic mood. "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," a folk tune, becomes a drama here ... Read More:

This excellent album contains eighteen songs that were popular during the WW2 years. The album starts with that well-known hit Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (performed by The Andrews Sisters), and then moves between jazzy hits (such as G.I. Jive and Yours). I really enjoyed hearing again some of the songs that used to be so close to my father's heart, including Long Ago (And Far Away) and The White Cliffs of Dover.
I must say that I found this to be a very good album. I miss my GI father, who passed away a year ago, and I felt like I captured a little piece of him when I listened to the music he loved all those years ago. So, if you like that great Big Band sound, or want to get a glimpse into the world of WW2, then get this album. I highly recommend ... Read More:

.....this one would get the limit. This is the most fabulous music video it has ever been my joy [and honor] to watch. And I've watched it a bunch of times. This concert of old favorite jazz standards found Diana, and her side-men, in absolutely perfect form. She obviously respects her back-up musicians, and they her; it makes for amazing chemistry.....
The technical aspects...sound, camera work, engineering, are all perfect. Diana connected well with her audience, despite the language barrier; everybody had a grand experience, as well they should have. The specific numbers need no comment; if you're reading this, you know them by heart.
Diana Krall is a miracle of God's creative art...a jazz singer for the ages. That she may well be the most beautiful ... Read More:
