I would hate to call what Oberst does shtick. He obviously has talent, and has obviously been refining his technique to allow a broader audience without compromising his sound...in fact, not compromising it enough. Let's not overstate his songwriting abilities- they are keenly aware of taking traditional roots-rock forms and injecting edgy minor progressions, hardly more. Good move on his part then, to provide counterpoint with more electronic-based dabblings the same time as this release. He still has a ways to go writing that masterpiece everyone suspects he is capable of, hinting with a few of his most solidly strummed songs yet. i got this record just in time...i was being suffocated with music that all sounded exactly the same! so getting doolittle was really a good clean breath of fresh air for me. what makes it such a great album is all the variety in it. one minuet your dancing to "debaser" and the next your being moved by the sad, revealing pain of "hey" THEN your banging your head to "gouge away". so it truly is a work of art....in conclusion, if you like nirvana's first album and weezer's Pinkerton, you should get the album that inspired both of them...you wont be dissapointed

Ah, the brown album. There is so much one could say about this utterly perfect album. It lyrics conjure visions of lonely country sides, and brisk cold winds. It's music defies categorization. It's cover...pricelss. What an image, what a band, well they are The Band!

1. Across The Great Divide - The best way to open this album, big! It establishes many of the selling points to this fine album. Dig the uber unique drum sound, and Manuel's perfectly honed vocal.
2. Rag Mama Rag - A great ragtime jam, Manuel's loose, sloppy drums, and Rick's screechy violin add to the "basement" aura. A great jam.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

My first Yoshimi record was sent in a box about two inches too small, not only was the case damaged but the record itself was warped. I voiced my concerns and ordered a replacement. The replacement was shipped in the same size box and was also warped. Customer service was less than helpful and I'm still disappointed I wasted my time and money in the whole ordeal. Buyer beware.
