Own but only two CDs by this great jazz artist and will, no doubt, buy more.
Have played this record, and Dippin', a few times by now--and each time I play either record it's like hearing it for the very first time--and that's the highest compliment I can give to any recording and/or musician.
Further evidence that jazz (just might be) the greatest of the arts ever invented by humans. And that's a tough admission for me, as I have always been a lover of good writing and fine art.
Release Date June 16, 1998
The funkiest Reuben Wilson album we're alluding to is a 1975 release on the Cadet label entitled 'Got To Get Your Own'. It's supa-bad! And it's coming out in July '08.
Release Date July 01, 1991
I bought the LP of this recording when it was first released, and it knocked my socks off. Strangely, I have yet to acquire the CD, but I just corrected that egregious oversight.
Roy Eldridge's vocal on "Kidney Stew" is a gass. He manages to sound like Louis when he sings the line, "Love that woman like a rootin' hog loves his corn, bop, bop, bop." and then scats like Pops. A Basie jam is always exciting, and great fun. Ever since I was a child in the 1940's I have always loved Basie. I heard him in person with his big band for the first time at Birdland with Joe Williams in 1959. I sat in the Bullpen till they closed. I was the last one out through those glass doors. I thought, "even the doors swing at Birdland."

I've owned this for years and just got back to it after a long hiatus. If you are a fan of this type of sweet music, you should own this too.
Release Date October 17, 1990
I agree with Byran Moore, these two discs are chick's approach to the solo platform in the early 70's.and there both excellent sets. After the first 5 tunes Chick starts taking it 'outside'.He does a remarkable job on Masquerello(a monk tune)It took some courage to speak a 'new voice',as Keith Jarrett did around the same time period. These trailblazers always add some excitement by trying something different, what the heck, try the approach and see the respose. As George Bernard Shaw once said "it is better to have tried and failed, then never to have tried at all..."
Enjoy

What is it about this crisp and jumpy album? I thought it would be old-jazz pre-bop, but there's some rock & roll propellant in here that merges sweetly with the brass leads. A sharp pianist too, whoever he is (my library copy is missing the cover). And the date -- was Dizzy still blowing it in 1984-?
