This is the second of three CD's Billy Cobham did for the GRP label. It has the GRP lite jazz style written all over it.
This CD came out in 1986 when people were still experimenting with the relatively new CD technology and digital recording was really starting to take off. This and Cobhams' first GRP CD, Warning, are all about experimenting with the sonic and dynamic qualities possible with digital technology.
The sound on this CD is wonderful and at the time unique. Some of the instruments have a very beautiful sound. The drumming is very deep and sharp. The dynamic range and precision of the sound are far superior to any of Cobham's earlier work. Some of his LP's were especially bad, with all the pops and ... Read More:

Spirit Walk is the most sincere, energetic and luminous record i've heard in a long time. Another reviewer on this page has foregrounded the collaboration with Keiren Hebden in his assessment of the album, if you're after that, check out the Exchange Sessions recordings. I've played this out a few times and people always approach me and ask what it is, it's beautifully recorded and produced, and creates an atmosphere in any room - particularly 'which one' and 'lugano', but there are plenty of other highlights. As the sleevenotes attest, Reid understands that groove has reached some kind of ascendency in contemporary music, and his drumming is a refined, idiosyncratic display of that knowledge. The large ensemble format is executed to perfecion ... Read More:

Blues walk is a classic 50's hard bob/bebop recording. What sets the album apart from other albums of the same era is the subtle congo playing of Ray Barretto. While it may seem commonplace today to throw an extra percussionist in to spice things up, this was one of the first "straight ahead" bebop recordings that incorporated a congo player into an album that was not a "latin jazz" album. Further the playing of Barretto was not overwhelming, which was the key to the success of the album. The overall effect was fantastic. There is great interplay between the band, Barretto and Donaldson. Most critics would rate this as Donaldson's best overall album and I agree. He's just starting to leave a straight ahead "charlie parker" style of playing ... Read More:

This is, by far, the greatest party recording ever made for musicians. The hipness of it is without flaw. What Jo Stafford, and her husband, Paul Weston, created will live forever tickling the funny-bones of the musical cognizenti.

Recorded in June, 1961 this album set at that time the standard for the piano-bass-drums jazz trio - a standard that has still not been surpassed. It is essential to any collection of jazz, or music for that matter.

All it takes is to check out Alligator Boogie and really know what soul/funk/jazz is all about, if there is such a thing of course. The lineup speaks for itself! A little organ here, drums there, sax there... You know the drill!

I bought this CD to replace the cassette version I already owned years ago. Even my 12 yo son like this one. It is very upbeat and easy to listen to. Some people find Setzer's guitar heavy handed but frankly I do not as a rule like the "big band, swing style". This is a bit different and most people that have heard it have liked it!
