Now You See It...Now You Don't

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Michael Brecker

Release Date August 27, 1990
Words simply cannot convey the deep sadness I feel when I listen to Now you see it ....now you don't. This disc was my introduction to Michael Brecker and I must've listened to it constantly for 6 months back in the early 90's. Songs like "Ode to the Doo Dah Day" and the poignant and atmospheric "Quiet City" are a testiment to the talent and prowess of the musician and the intellect of the man. Also, "Dog's in the wine shop" is a moving piece of music. There will never be another like Michael Brecker and I am glad that this album became a part of my education in Jazz.

CD-Charts Music : Before We Were Born

Before We Were Born

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Bill Frisell

Release Date October 17, 1990
Before We Were Born is one of Frisell's finest albums ranked up there with "Rambler" and "Gone, Just Like a Train". It shows Frisell during his more experimental stages, back when he was regularly working with John Zorn and Naked City.

There's a wide range of material here from the quasi-Morriconian "Lone Ranger", to the epic "Hard Plains Drifter" (arranged with the help of Zorn), to the strange opening track. Along the way, we also get a nice little suite of tunes featuring some saxophones and, in particular, Julius Hemphill who plays a blistering solo on "Love Motel". As usual, Joey Baron keeps things fresh rhythmically and his soloing on "Freddy's Step" is a treat.

My major complain is the sound quality. The sound ... Read More:

Tourist in Paradise

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: The Rippingtons

Release Date May 11, 1989
I have never been very fond of jazz music outside of a few artists such as Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione and Weather Report. None seemed to break out of that old jazz mold cast years and years ago except for a few groups/artists as I mentioned until I listened to a late night jazz station here in Sacramento, California. I heard Tourist in Paradise by the Rippingtons and was so blown away I had to leave immediately to the record store to buy it. It was the best investment I have ever made and I could not believe how Earth Shattering this whole cd was for me. I became a huge fan and purchased most of the Rippingtons cds although none really ever came close to this effort. Back then the keyboards were revolutionary and striking and the rhythms were outstanding. ... Read More:

Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings (1962-70)

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Albert Ayler

Release Date March 08, 2005
12 discs are a lot of listening for any artist. listening to Albert Ayler is a challenging experience in small doses. So this is a monumental task. AA, or the Holy Ghost, as he refers to himself provides a wonderful experience with these discs. The music, usually recorded live, was not meant to be released so the freedom of expression that is his calling card is more unrestrained than his commercial releases - which on one can accuse of being conventional. His tunes careen wildly from spirituals or freaky atonal explorations. Never dull, always surprising, and never satisfied to mine the familiar.

Cohn on the Saxophone

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Al Cohn

Release Date August 23, 2005
I'm practically shocked to see this one has been reissued. Now if only it could be noticed.

Downbeat Magazine awarded "Cohn on the Saxophone" five stars when it appeared on the Dawn label back in 1956, when inventively-played, heart-felt music counted as much as innovation and novelty. The well-worn disc remains one of the few genuine treasures in a collection of LPs, cassettes, and CD's that has become massive if not always selective over the past 40 years. Cohn may have become more aggressive and adventurous in his later years, sporting a harder tone, but he was never more "at home" with his horn or his musical persona than on this set. From the opening bars of "We Three"--as unforced and unaffected a performance as I've heard committed to record ... Read More:

Moodsville

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Tommy Flanagan Trio

Release Date January 01, 1995
Tommy Flanagan laid down some of the best piano sounds around. This trio session with Tommy Potter on Bass and Roy Haynes on Drums was recorded almost exactly 48 years ago in 1960.
The Prestige Moodsville series was not meant to be just "Mood" music, but much of it can certainly perform that function. These mostly laid-back cuts stand up to serious listening as well as being great "bachelor pad" music. The sound is quite good throughout - nicely re-mastered.
