I only heard a blurp of this artist on the radio, but just that 10 second bit was enough. I ordered the cd the next day and "Wow!" I wasn't disappointed. Every track is great,if you can listen to this cd without tapping your feet then check your pulse because your dead. Snowboy and his crew can really jam. I am not stopping at just one I'm ordering Mambo Rage after posting my review. I suggest you do the same.

... that so many people rate this album so highly. I don't like the format of the repeated alternate takes, and I don't like the constant background noise of clinking glasses, chatter, and so on. I guess it would make decent background music for a cocktail party and would probably be of great interest to fellow musicians who are interested in Evan's piano technique, but this is an album that I have had for years, and it hardly ever gets played--never, actually.
At the time that I bought it I was under the impression that this was a great, essential album, but I don't think it is.

"Coltrane" starts with "Out Of This World", a 14-minute long song which is essentially the centerpiece of the album, though it's the opening track. It's written by Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer, but it sounds like a Coltrane-penned piece. I wasn't aware of any other major jazz instrumentalists playing this song: Coltrane wasn't the first but Kenny Burrell and Donald Byrd did a version shortly after Coltrane's came out! At any rate, it's the best song on this CD. "Soul Eyes" is a good ballad. "The Inch Worm" feels too much like Coltrane is trying to recreate "My Favorite Things" for me to enjoy too much. Coltrane uses a soprano sax to play a children's song in a modal jazz manner. "Tunji" is a midtempo modal song. "Miles' Mode" is a faster ... Read More:
Although the personnel was different when Kenny Burrell and Donald Byrd went into the studios a week after they made the ALL NIGHT LONG recording (except for Doug Watkins [b] and Art Taylor [d], who are also on both), the brilliance of the music remained the same. Both albums are 1950s blowing session par excellence. The opening track here, the title tune, credited to Burrell, is a medium-slow 12-bar blues that stretches out for over 18 minutes. Often I get annoyed with such lengthy takes on a single tune, especially when the form is a simple blues, but not when the playing is this good.
Byrd contributes two tunes, both taken medium-up, and he and tenor man Frank Foster play well on these. Foster has a lovely sound, warm yet forceful. Pianist ... Read More:

"Journey in Satchidananda" was my introduction to Alice Coltrane. Her music never ceases to amaze even after repeated listenings. The listener may have a sense of being right there in the studio with Alice and her group of fantastic musicians.
All I can say about this cd is pack your bags and expect the unexpected on this musical tour of the spiritual realms. This cd goes well with a big cup of tea and your favorite companion or pet nearby.

This is a very fine record, indeed. The quintet tracks are fine, but what makes this such a marvellous record are the trio tracks where this wonderful tenor player is so finely accompanied by the guitarist Skeeter Best and the great bass player, Oscar Pettiford. I just love the way Mr Thompson improvises here, so deeply traditional but at the same time so very personal and exciting. I don't think there is any finer record with this supreme saxophone player.
