This should not be your very first Pat Martino CD. I recommend "Consciousness", "El Hombre" or "East!" for tightness, variety and sound quality. "Live" however has the grace of stretching out. It is a long trance in vintage 70s style with Fender Rhodes and electric bass supporting a very animated Pat Martino. "Special Door" is a cooker that has Martino spinning his hypnotic lines in a loose and conversational give-and-take, stop-and-start rendering that he was known for. Another great take is a tune he still does regularly: Sunny. If you are a fan and do not have this CD you will not be disappointed! |
