CD-Charts Music : Live!

Live!

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Pat Martino

Release Date January 24, 1992
This live set has been out of print for years. Now those of us who grew up with this album can have it again! This should not be your very first Pat Martino CD. I recommend "Consciousness", "El Hombre" or "East!" for tightness, variety and sound quality. "Live" however has the grace of stretching out. It is a long trance in vintage 70s style with Fender Rhodes and electric bass supporting a very animated Pat Martino. "Special Door" is a cooker that has Martino spinning his hypnotic lines in a loose and conversational give-and-take, stop-and-start rendering that he was known for. Another great take is a tune he still does regularly: Sunny. If you are a fan and do not have this CD you will not be disappointed!

CD-Charts Music : Footprints

Footprints

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Pat Martino

Release Date
Everyone has a few, a very few, "cosmic" recordings that changed the way they view music and the world. Pat Martino's "The Visit" (here renamed "Footprints", probably for better recognition) is such a recording for me. For one, the core of this recording is the interplay of two guitars. Virtuosos like McLaughlin and Martino sound especially good when their fire is allowed to blend with another guitar. From the Latin cooker "The Visit" to the world-class bopper "Road Song" we get a hot update on Wes with a hint of the outside, thanks to bassist Richard Davis. In the late sixites we were used to hearing the spooky and adventurous sounds of this man (a favorite of mine is Coltrane's "Nature Boy" where Davis and Garrison fill the room with bass). ... Modern Jazz Quartet at the Music Inn, Vol. 2

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: The Modern Jazz Quartet

Release Date June 21, 1995
Switch the lights off, relax with a good glass of mulled wine and let the sheer warm musicality of this album wash over you. Sonny Rollins is the highlight of this album - shame he only plays on two of the tracks. His sax break at the beginning of Night in Tunisia where the band make a slight pause before they start swinging again is one of the creamiest most delicious moments in jazz. This one of the albums to have!
