by: Dave Brubeck

Release Date April 16, 1995
I had and lost track of this disk several years ago. Hearing Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck on the same bandstand is a never-to-be-repeated experience. The disk includes yet another rendition of the oft-repeated "Take Five," but with the interface between Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond and the audience, the performance ranks with Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing!" at Carnagie Hall in 1938 as "The One to Hear."

Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond

Release Date October 17, 1995
The interplay and complementary interaction/counterpoint between Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond is remarkable on this album - particularly given the fact that it's been documented that they had little rehearsal time. Something about these sessions inspired Gerry to play at the top of his always fine form. As to Desmond - if you've only heard him in the confines of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, then you haven't heard his best work. This is at least among his very best recordings ever.

There are a few instances where you can tell both horn men are waiting on the other to act next - but this is likely more evident to musicians. A little more practice before laying down the tunes would have smoothed that out - but may have killed the spontaniety ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Vinyl Records
by: Oscar Peterson with Milt Jackson

Release Date November 14, 1995
When you read the two names on the cover you immediately get excited about two of the biggest names when it comes to jazz and how the collaboration will be. It does not disapoint. Although Peterson clearly adapted his play a bit to Jackson, it does not make him any less brilliant, the way he allowed Jackson to shine even more but still be able to express himself is the way only a great musician can. Jackson himself plays as he is supposed to do, as we know him. It is slightly different than in the MJQ, but then in a fresh way. The timing and choices of all of the artists are perfect.

The result is a sound fresh and uncomplicated, it is truly what two geniusses who have nothing to prove make while having fun.
Greatly recommended, to any Jazz ... Read More:

by: Kenny Barron

Release Date August 17, 1992
I had never listened to this album before a couple days ago: well, it's one of the finest jazz works I've ever heard. Well played, with Barron in outstanding shape. I discovered a "never heard before" barron on electric piano, in a early-seventies style.
Don't miss it. And forgive my English...

Nuyorican Soul

by: Nuyorican Soul

Release Date March 11, 1997
For anyone who ever wondered what the great cultural center of our universe, New York is up to musically besides Broadway, Off Broadway and television network shows to include quiz show themes, here is your answer; "Nuyorican Soul." This gem of a CD confirms that the cultural patchwork quilt that is New York is alive and well with wonderful sounds and rythyms in this package. Musicianship and performance extrordinaire! Perhaps you are bored with the same old thing musically. If so, then this is just what the Dr. ordered. I highly reccomend "Nuyorican Soul." Richard Law
