"Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane" is a somewhat odd mixture of tracks from different Thelonious Monk recording sessions. Nonetheless, it is an essential purchase for Monk/Trane-a-philes due to the absolute brilliance of the 3 of its 6 tracks which feature the legendary Thelonious Monk/John Coltrane Quartet.
Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane are two of the most seminal figures in the history of jazz. Yet in spite of the acknowledged significance of their brief tenure together in a working band in 1957, until fairly recently there was a dearth of recorded material documenting that union. Up to the point of the release of "Discovery!- Live at the Five Spot" in 1993 (more on that later), the "Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane" ... Read More:

Who can say something additional about this wonder? You can taste every track with delight. You can relax with it at home; you can play it while driving, you will have a great companionship with this music; it will never let you down. It's so authentic, so frank, so good; no strange effects, sophistications or commercial tricks. No need of it. It is sold by itself perfectly, with its quality and artistry. Now there are a lot of records loaded with artificiality to trap a big mass of consumers; thanks god, the pureness of this music doesn't need any of these things; it's like Beethoven, it's 5th symphony is sold by itself. A masterpiece, never miss it.

This album is from 1967 same year as Lou recorded the classic "Alligator Bogaloo" and this album stands the comparison with the Bogaloo album. The only change here is that George Benson was replaced by a young Jimmy Ponder..this was actually the first time I heard Ponder when I bought the original vinyl version in 1969.Ponder is still ,sadly enough, quite unknown to the big audience..his playing here is extremely pleasing and he "lifts" the sometimes to often played "The shadow of your smile" to another level with a beautiful solo. Idris Muhammad is recorded slightly more upfront than on the other albums which gives this recording some extra pulse and groove.Blue Mitchell on trumpet has that laid back bounce that ... Read More:

This was Billy Cobham's third release on GRP records. The other two were Warning and Power Play. Picture This is the better of the three.
With the move to GRP in 1984, Cobham embraced the digital and CD era. His first two GRP albums really pushed the digital technology, with a high dymanic range and a sharp staccato sound. Unfortunately, the music was not all that interesting and was even boring in parts.
In this third album, Cobham incorporates the new digital sound with his old style of music. The result is a nice mixture of traditional jazz, featuring Grover Washington Jr. and Randy Becker on saxes, and Cobham's electronic rhythms.
His version of Prince's Sign O' the Times is especially interesting. Read More:
