Ruben Blades "Mundo" is a tasty cd. I compare Ruben Blades to Jet Li in that both are professionals in their craft and they are both at the top of their game. True, some of the pure salsa is gone at moments during this beatiful album, but not really. His band are excellent musicians and there are moments when priceless grooves are achieved.
Ruben Blades trascends with this album your average performer. His lyrics are universal in their theme and if there is one message to be had is this: We are all the Human Race, where music is concerned the universality of the human spirit is all that matters. Is the kind of album that at first you might be mildly dissapointed and critical. But once you take the tour again these jewels start shinning ... Read More:

I just wrote a review for Habib Koite's Foly live album where I said I'd listened to that as much as anything in the last 2 years, then I thought about this CD. This would be the competition. This CD is one of the best CDs I've every heard. It's what others say, just a brilliant mix of styles in the songs. The studio production is fantastic. I heard new little elements every time I listen to it. The grooves are completely infectious, the songs great and the musicianship just off the scale.
I first heard them live before hearing the CD and they were as good a live band as I've ever seen and I live for live music. Buy this CD and go hear them live. I'm much less crazy about the 2nd CD, Island Life. As one review said, it's like they're channeling ... Read More:

Listen to the samples Amazon's provided. If something mambo like "Aprietame Asi (Squeeze Me Like That)" or the two-part meringue "Consangracion" doesn't grab you, nothing will. Simple test to see who's a zombie: play this CD; if they don't start to get down and dance, you'll know.
This ain't your Mexican style, your Puerto Rican style, it ain't your zydeco style, but its chili-pepper hot, syncopated rhythms and accordion-driven melodic structure beats all. This ain't your American NY 'hood-style merengue, either. The Dominican Republic shines in the hands of La India Canela, like the moon on banana leaves. What an artist. You can't forget, let alone ignore, such beauty.
And for those of you who think you *hate* accordion in your music, ... Read More:

Let's get this out of the way from Jump Street: great music. But this is the 2nd of the "new" Fania reissues that I've heard that sound, well, crappy. Fired up by seeing the movie "El Cantante" (the Acadamy Award is safe but if you dig salsa, I think it's worth your time) my girlfriend and I went out and made a couple purchases. I got Comedia, since I lived with the old LP when it came out and she got the just-issued CD of Lavoe's originals performed in the movie. El Cantante sounds just slightly better on her disc but on both of them there's a miniscule drop-out at about 4:45. And they sound muffled, like the early days of Dolby. So maybe they're just working from masters in poor shape. But when I think of some of the jazz & blues reissues from waaay back ... Read More:
