The wonderful first album from Madeleine Peyroux, a jazz singer whose music and voice sound somewhat like Billie Holiday. This is very well-recorded and engaging music. Her two subsequent albums are also good. I like this for dinner parties, in the car and on long, sunny summer weekends (which we're currently experiencing).

This play is about pain, loss and most of all, hope for redemption. I was lucky enough to catch a touring cast perform this show locally back in the 90's and was brought to tears by the song "Lily's Eyes" (which is a tough thing to do to an angst-filled teen). Though at the moment you won't catch this show on Broadway or a major tour... if you ever get the opportunity you really should see it.
As far as this CD, and my review of it. This is a very good rendition of the show, it is well mixed and if you have not seen the show you should be able to follow the basics of the story fairly easily. Most of the actors have amazing voices and the songs are performed well. I particularly enjoy the parts of Martha and Dicken. I was not as ... Read More:

Seems like all I listen to on this cd, is "Summer Fly."
I thought Hayley, could of done better, but maybe I need to
give her a second try, as she is a wonderful singing voice.

I had long ignored Judy Garland because I unjustly assumed she only did campy show tunes. Big mistake. Yes, she does do some obligatory Broadway hits (e.g. "That's Entertainment"); but her performance here is much more versatile than I expected. Most of my musical collection favors singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sara Vaughan, and Nina Simone, etc. but Garland is a comfortable fit.
Best example: on disk 2 she sings "Stormy Weather" - a song made big by the likes of Ethel Waters and Lena Horne - both phenomenal singers themselves - but their versions are easily dwarfed by Garland's performance of Mort Lindsey's* arrangement of this classic blues standard. Garland's voice is a torrent of emotion that transforms the song from ... Read More:

Dave Koz does a great job in bringing a jazzy and smooth touch to some of the greatest movie music that has been produced. Both versions of "The Shadow of Your Smile" are just perfect. And the "Pink Panther" theme is GREAT!!

(This is a copy of a review I posted on the 1946 CD of this series, but applies identically to this one.)
There used to be a series by ASV-Living Era of hits of various years, which is no longer available because the company was merged into another, and the new owner withdrew the Living Era series. This series, by Dynamic, fills the gap that was left by the withdrawal of the earlier series.
There are 25 songs to a CD, approximately the same as on the ASV-Living Era series, and though there are no liner notes (as opposed to the very good notes that ASV-Living Era supplied) the price is so much cheaper that it makes up for this. These CDs are VERY affordable.
The choice of songs is slightly different from those on the ASV CDs, so one could see ... Read More:

I absolutely love this musical more than life itself! I hope to some day fulfill my dream of seeing it on Broadway, but it would of course have to come back, but I'd settle for London or Shea's (my local theater) if it doesn't happen.
The first Les Mis song I ever heard came from this CD, "Master of House" which is one of my favorites. Alun Armstrong sings the best version of it on here. I also love Colm Wilkinson, who will always be THE original Valjean. Michael Ball and Judy Juhn do an awesome duet of "A Heart Full of Love," and he does an amazing solo of "Empty Chairs." And Lea Salonga last but not least, is great as Eponine. Her and Ball do a very uplifting, but very sad version of "A Little Fall of Rain," the second Les Mis song I ever heard, which I personally like better ... Read More:
