Despite the vintage of these recordings, Vashti Bunyan is a fresh voice. The "Train Song" is especially appealing, and was used recently in a TV commercial, which is where I first heard her sing. If you were a fan of folk rock in the 60's, you would probably put this CD on the same shelf as Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Collins.

Like a few other reviewers said, this was not an immediate favorite of mine (unlike the very accesible Sunshine Superman). It took several listens to grow on me, but I'm so glad I let it.

My favorite album track on here is "Hi It's Been A Long Time", and that was the song that made me keep returning to more than the title track. Some people say this album has not dated well, but that all depends on what you are looking for. I enjoy music that is an obvious artifact of the time. I like '60s psychedelic folk because it SOUNDS like '60s psychedelic folk...and who did it better than Donovan? Nobody gave sunshine and flowers quite the personification Donovan did.

"Mellow Yellow"--both the album and the hit single--followed "Sunshine Superman" in Donovan's canon of releases. It is perhaps a touch below the latter in terms of overall originality and vision, but only a "small touch." In this work Donovan gets down to the style that became permanently his terrain: jazz-accented and mythically-oriented light folk-pop. We saw Damien at an Irish Fest and were intrigued enough to make the purchase. The CD has a wide variety from traditional folk type Irish music to more modern songs. "Rainy night in Soho" is very lovely and the lyrics are amazing. Good CD if you enjoy a range of Irish music.

I actually hadn't heard of Vashti until after that Reebok commercial with "Train Song", I completely fell in love with this album after hearing the song clips. I'm one who likes Donovan and the Incredible String Band, so I enjoy her pastoral themes and traditional melodies more than others might. But even if you're into good singer-songwriters with fantastic voice, I recommend this.

This cd of the original release does not contain Donovan's poetic masterpiece, a song with lyric "cat is sleeping in the sun"; the combination of lyrics and guitar is one of the all time great poetic visions.

I've only recently re-discovered Fairport Convention and Pentangle, both distant, vague memories from my youth. I started collecting re-released albums on CD of both groups, in chronological order. I rank both groups now among my favorites and regret the many years lost that I didn't enjoy them both. But as these two groups seem to me so coincidentally similar, including the similarity that each group's female lead vocalist seems to be the gem of the group, I also notice (Is it only me?) that these women, gifted singers that they are (were), need direction, and left on their own come up short on arrangements. They seem to need the group, and on their own they make poor choices in material. I've come away from this Sandy Denny (formerly of Fairport Convention) album with the telltale bad impression ... This is a great new CD from the equally great Michael English. He does a wonderful job on a great selection of songs. I'm so glad that he is back recording Christian music again & is enjoying singing for the Lord & has been accepted in the Christian Music community. He has an awesome voice.
