My family and I love all of the Winter Solstice cds but far and away III is the best of the bunch. Songs like "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Snow is Lightly Falling" are so simple and haunting and stir a soul-recognition of this time of year that few other songs can match. We start playing it in late November and continue right thru to early spring. We will have to replace it soon as we are wearing it out. I cannot imagine December without it.

The Chieftains music blends so excellently with the wonderful voices that comprise this album. Whether it's the haunting "Long Black Veil" or the nostalgic "Mo Ghile Mear", the Chieftains get it right every time. If you like Irish music, Irish ballads, or even just Mick Jagger, this album is a must-have.

the music is hot, and the taps make it hotter, if you get the video, or dvd, it is much better... irish music at its best...

It is unfortunate that most of the music on the air during the 60's where I lived was mainstream top 40 music. Only in the early 70's did one station appear in my area that called itself "an underground" station. They often played music of The Grateful Dead and other San Francisco bands that listeners seldom heard in this corner of the West. The station's format had fewer commercials, and they played more "album rock." But I never had a chance to hear Fairport Convention. I loved the Judy Collins cover of "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" without knowing that she didn't write it. When I heard Sandy Denny's original for the first time in June of '08, I had to have this CD. This song is hauntingly beautiful and the guitar work is superb. The rest of ... Read More:

Despite the vintage of these recordings, Vashti Bunyan is a fresh voice. The "Train Song" is especially appealing, and was used recently in a TV commercial, which is where I first heard her sing. If you were a fan of folk rock in the 60's, you would probably put this CD on the same shelf as Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Collins.

I am a big fan of Scottish folk legend Archie Fisher, particularly his 1976 masterpiece, "Will Ye Gang, Love". So when I heard that he was releasing his first new album in twenty years, I was both thrilled and a bit nervous. Would he be too over the hill? Hardly. Fisher's voice, a gentle, supple brogue that makes every song sound timeless, is in fine form on these songs. The album also includes eight vintage recordings from the 1970s that were recorded for a record that was later shelved -- a bonus treat for longtime devotees. If you're an Archie Fisher fan from many years back, or if you're new to his work, but appreciate Celtic folk that skilfully encompasses modern influences, then you'll definitely want to check this out. Highly recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack, ... Read More:

I've been listening to the Real McKenzies since their album Loch'd & Loaded. Unlike the blue collar irish punk of the Dropkick Murphies, The Real McKenzies are scottish through and through. Robbie Burns ,the great bard himself, often serves as muse to this band of hard rocking and hard drinkin kilt wearing fun lovin punk rockers.
It isn't often that one can say wow, theyis band isn't stuck in rut at all ,they keep growing, and the Real Mckenzies are one of the few bands to do that. Over their last twa albums, Off the Leash and 10,000 Shots, thy have showed remarkable depth and craftsmanship in their work. They have maintained their energy and do not sacrifice any of the their greatness.
The entire album is listenable but I found the following ... Read More:

I bought this cd thinking it would be nice to listen to for Christmas and it is nice but not what I thought it would be.

This album from Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, singer from top Irish band Danu, is pure delight. Featuring an excellent cast of musicians including guitar whiz Gerry O'Beirne who wrote two of the songs including the ever-popular Western Highway, Muireann's gentle voice beguiles in a mostly traditional selection in English and Gaelic. The renditions of the well-known Banks of the Nile and The Parting Glass as well as lesser-known numbers like Isle of Malachy and Emigrant's Farewell are all unpretentious and in true traditional style. Her version of Western Highway will be hard to beat. The album also features a couple of stirring instrumentals for variety. Only one contemporary styled track, Persuasion, seems a little out of place.
The warm recording allow Muireann's ... Read More:
