CD-Charts Music : The Prodigal Comes Home

The Prodigal Comes Home

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Michael English

Release Date February 26, 2008
Well finally this is the one ! You know when they ask you wich album you would take to a deserted island, if you only could take one (and there would be a cd player on the island). Well I would take 'the prodigal comes home'. I play it every single day.
What's so great about it ? The texts are great, for a starter. Every text is like a poem or a prayer or a quote you could use to lift someone up.
I like the music ! And I like Michel's voice. His voice has that somewhat rough honesty, with a passion coming through that gives me goosebumps.
I couldn't possibly say which song is may favorite. There is a song for every mood and every struggle. And every song is uplifting, hopegiving, encouraging, heart opening ...
I hope ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Midlife and the Great Unknown

Midlife and the Great Unknown

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: David Whyte

Release Date June 03, 2003
I wish the "midlife" reference were not in the title as it made me hesitate and delay trying this product for way too long. It is such an exquisite treat and so powerful in way more ways than I can convey through words. David Whyte's uniquely powerful delivery adds further punch to his great insights that reach ever deeper the more one listens. Thus I found it amazing the first time I listened and keep being blown away by finding it ever more powerful every time I listen. In addition to the content, the place David Whyte speaks from is itself profoundly impactful. At the time I ended up deciding to buy this product I had greatly lamented Amazon not selling David Whyte's "poetry of self-compassion" as I had adored that tape. Although I still ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Richard & Linda Thompson

Release Date September 28, 2004
How could a man so young be so bitter? And how could it all sound so great, even so life-affirming? Not a misstep on the record, every song here is written and exists; these are not just words set to music, they have the quality of folksongs transmitted orally over generations. Some of the really world weary, misanthropic songs that would pervade 1975's Pour Down Like Silver, but there is a little bit more af a joyous atmosphere working here, despite songs like "The End of the Rainbow": "Life seems so rosy from the cradle/ but I'll be a friend, I'll tell you what's in store/ there's nothing at the end of the rainbow/ there's nothing to grow up for anymore."

A true folksinger, Thompson is so at home in the genre that he is not even working ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : In Bruges

In Bruges

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Original Soundtrack

Release Date February 12, 2008
There are movies where the soundtrack plays on, and it adds to the theme of the movie. Then there are movies, where the soundtrack adds nothing. And then, there are movies where the soundtrack more than adds to the movie.

The soundtrack of "In Bruges" must fall in the third category. I can't recollect many soundtracks that accentuate the mood of the movie it is supposed to hold up, especially a movie as complex as "In Bruges".

To be honest, I'd not heard of Carter Burwell before this soundtrack, but I was watching this movie earlier today, and the background music moved me so much, that I stopped the movie (was on DVD!), went online and bought the soundtrack right then and there! Burwell has earned his places of respect in my list - entering ... Read More:

Once in a Red Moon

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Secret Garden

Release Date March 26, 2002
Every time a new Secret Garden album comes along, it sounds just that bit more special than the last, and I expect the bubble to break and everyone will be talking about them. However, to date they still seem to be low key and little heard of. Maybe this wonderful album will be the one to turn that around!
The mix of Norwegian classical orchestration with the most beautiful and evocative in Celtic music, makes for a sublimely uplifting and relaxing experience. This is not just chill out music, but music to inspire.
The collaborators, particularly Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson add a wonderful extra element which lets the music really breathe, and means the listener will never get bored with the CD - you'll be able to listen to this over and over and over ... Read More:

Long Black Veil

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: The Chieftains

Release Date January 24, 1995
A fine album, with an interesting choice of songs. "Foggy Dew" and "The Long Black Veil" are especially moving.

For those seeking chipper pub music, look elsewhere. This is a fine, reflective view of Irish music. Top notch, all the way.

For serious Irish music, you can't do better than this.

Welcome Here Again

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Martin Hayes & Dannis Cahill

Release Date February 12, 2008
With over a decade under their belts as a creative team, the Irish duo of Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill return with another set of subtle, elegaic fiddle-guitar instrumentals. It's moody, mournful and utterly entrancing - one of the most interesting aspects of their style is how unobtrusive and unassuming Cahill is as an accompanist for Hayes' masterful violin work. Guitarists are often expected to come up with some sort of hot licks, but Cahill seems utterly content to play a strictly supporting role. This sets the tone for all their work, music that doesn't dominate or assault your ears, but does provide a rich, rewarding experience. If you've ever felt turned off by stereotypical Celtic instrumentals -- all those hyperactive jigs and reels -- give Hayes and Cahill a shot. They find the ... Read More:
