TROUBADOUR: THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION 1964-1976 contains the absolute cream of Donovan's crop of folk-turned-psychedelic folk-rock style, quickly moving from his early days as the British Dylan to a more psychedelic sound that was perfect for the flower-power era. The folk years are only represented by four or five songs, as Donovan quickly moves into more hippie-oriented turf. Even though I've never even tried any drugs not ordered by a physician, I must say that these songs are great whether your stoned or clear-headed. The fact that Donovan, like so many other post-1964 rock artists, opposes Indonesia's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes TROUBADOUR: THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION 1964-1976 an essential ... Aw no, not another hippy. Not another counter-culture lifestyle mullah. Ok, it looks that way but first, let's check Nick Drake's hippie-dom credentials;
1, Centre Parting ? - Check.
2, Floral Shirt/Dungarees ? - Check.
3, Being on Island Records ? - Check.
4, Standing in the woods with an acoustic guitar looking meaningful ? - Check.
So, he meets the criteria, but does he have a pleasing, cynic-bashing, soulful music, designed (in a genuinely conspiratorial sense ) to make your wobbling correspondent eat his facetious words with side-orders of tofu and quorn?
Of course he does, 'Bryter Layter' is yet another excellent surprise.
This one is screaming 'winner' before you even get to the music. The ... Read More:

From the four pages of background notes written in 1998 by Todd Everett to the inclusion of their four hit singles with the then Decca label AND all four B-sides, this release from MCA, complete with excellent sound quality, is one CD that delivers what it says.
The five Irish emigrants - vocalist Jimmy Ferguson (who sadly passed away at age 57 in October of 1997), vocalist/guitarist Wil Millar, his brother George (guitar), their cousin Joe Millar (bass) and Wilcil McDowell (accordian) - who made their home base in Calgary in the Canadian province of Alberta, hit it big in early 1968 when their recording of the Shel Silverstein tune, The Unicorn, made it to # 2 on the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts as well as # 7 on the Billboard Pop Hot 100 b/w The ... I bought this CD after it was recommended to me by Amazon.com and I am quite pleased with it. I have listened to the entire album over a half dozen times and am still enjoying every song.
Karen has a pleasant singing voice and the accompiament and rythyms are entertaining as well. If you are a fan or Irish folk and contempary music I think you will enjoy this. Although that is just my opinion, your mileage may vary. :-)

This is a fantastic irish band that knows their genre, from slow, beautiful folk tunes to high energy fiddle thrashing and funny lyrics. They are, by far, my favorite Irish or Gaelic band.

I continue to listen to this album often. Every song is good and has its own atmospheric presence. I often travel to the high sierra nevada's and this album doesnt leave my cd player. I highly recommend it. Composed beautifully and sound quality is great.
