Front Parlour Ballads

by: Richard Thompson

Release Date August 09, 2005
This has very little dazzling guitar work from RT. His publicist certainly wanted to make his money by proclaiming: "Best work yet"! "RT is back and better than ever"! I hear none of that in this cd. This is the type of RT cd if you are trying to get your girlfriend to appreciate him and she has been turned off by all the guitar oriented dark melancholy songs of his - give this one a try. It reminds me of the RT cd you would put on in the background while chatting w/ others. if I want an epic guitar workout or storytelling-like songwriting I never put this one on for that.

THE IRISH TENORS: Home for Christmas

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan

Release Date January 08, 2007
I really enjoy this music. I like the quality and style of music presented by the Irish Tenors, and I like Christmas music. This is the perfect CD for me. I like hearing it from early November through the holiday season. I have given this album as a gift, and it was much appreciated. I would recommend it for anyone who likes traditional Christmas music.

We The People

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Schooner Fare

Release Date July 22, 1994
Until recently, I had never heard of Schooner Fare. Only a chance hearing of 'We The People' on satellite radio brought them to my attention. Having since obtained the eponymous album, I have to say it is beyond me how the popular garbage that usually passes for music today is so inescapable, and such a fine group as this is so far under the radar. This album has it all for any lover of acoustic folk music: songwriting that fires the imagination and lifts the spirit, tight harmonies, and a sound that is truly their own. My one regret is that it took me so long to find this.

A Woman's Heart: A Decade On

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Various Artists

Release Date February 18, 2003
I was on a tour of Southern Ireland last year, and the tour guide played this as we drove from Dublin to Cork. The first chance I got, I went into a music store and purchased a copy for myself.

The beautiful ballad by Sinead O'Conner is worth the price of admission alone. It is a song to play when you need comforting, and a reminder that everything will indeed get better. The tour guide shared with me that he purchased it for that song alone.

Everytime I play it my mind goes back to that tour and watching the beautiful green hills and small villages of Ireland go by.

Buy this one...you won't regret it.

The Tain

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Horslips

Release Date May 13, 2008
Not as whimsical as 1972's 'Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part', Horslips managed to produce, in 1974, the best if not the only Irish folk-prog-rock album. They sound rather like Tull at times, but by 74 Tull were sounding boring most of the time. This is more like 'Aqualung' crossed with early Lindisfarne. AMG says it's possibly the most advanced concept album ever, being based on Celtic myth cycles. Who cares. Just get this album, and if you think it sucks, email me at lupercal@yahoo.com and I'll give you.... hang on that's a stupid idea: how do I know you've even listened to it? Well, anyway...

Horslips went on to evolve into folk-punk-new-wave in the late 70's, while Ian Anderson was diddling around with synths, and other early 70's folk bands had collapsed. Do ... Read More:

by: Sinéad O'Connor

Release Date September 09, 2003
This is a fantastic double C.D. I play mine all the time. It has a lot of her greatest songs on it and some I didn't know, which are also great. I love Sinead, can never say enough good stuff about her, she never dissapoints me. Don't back down ever, Sinead.

by: Cherish the Ladies

Release Date September 27, 2005
This is a wonderful collection of new Celtic music. It is not a beer-chugging sing-along, but rather a refreshing assortment of reels, jigs and ballads sung by the beautiful voices of these Ladies...I do cherish them!

The Girl Who Couldn't Fly

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Kate Rusby

Release Date October 11, 2005
I can't imagine anyone not loving Kate Rusby's voice; it's replete with passion and sensitivity. One reviewer here said her voice was "pleasant." That's like saying the stained glass in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin is "okay," which would show a lack of adequate looking. This isn't background music; it's art, something to enter into, savor and experience, not McMusic as background noise for life.

The production work is wonderfully sparse and tasteful. If you like music with depth, clarity, beauty, emotion, and spirit, you'll love The Girl Who Couldn't Fly. If you're merely looking for a beat to do some booty-shakin' or working out, there's an abundance of..well..less-than-deep music out there for you. But Kate Rusby - this woman is worth real listening.

If You Saw Thro' My Eyes

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Ian Matthews

Release Date November 02, 2007
I have loved this record since I bought a second hand copy at Andy's record stall in Cambridge market in 1972. I still think it is the best thing Ian Matthews has done. 'Reno Nevada', with two of my favourite guitar players in Richard Thompson and Tim Renwick trading licks, has to be one of the great tracks ever.....

Year of the Flood

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
starring: Runrig

Release Date June 24, 2008
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights...."

OK, the downpour at Runrig's August 2007 "Beat the Drum" concert on the banks of Loch Ness wasn't quite of Biblical proportions, but it was the rainiest day in living memory for the area. Footage during the introductory electronic bagpipe melody (composed by Malcom Jones) shows 17,500 die-hard Runrig fans gleefully standing, dancing and even rolling in the mud while sheets of rain came pouring down.

Reportedly, the extreme moisture actually shorted out some of the recording equipment, so Runrig ... Read More:
