The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem

by: The Clancy Brothers & Makem & Tommy Makem

Release Date September 03, 1996
...its the real stuff with the Clancys and Tommy Makem. Its not bubble gum folk music. Its not Peter, Paul and Mary ffs...hehe...I have this album on vinyl. Original copy. I have nearly played it to death since I was a kid. I highly recommend this - NOT for some yuppie St. Patrick's day (ugh!) brunch. But just listen to this anytime. I personally take these guys seriously. But its fun and vivid and youll go places with this one. My favorite songs here are Jug of Punch, Johnny I hardly Knew ye, and Ballinderry- which is sung by Tommy Makem and i promise youll cry...but the tears will be welcomed. Makems voice was/is unmatched!

Its like another world in your ear that leads to your heart and goes into your soul......sound corny?....just ... Read More:

Richard Thompson - 1000 Years of Popular Music (2 CD & 1 DVD Set)

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Richard Thompson

Release Date June 27, 2006
Been an R.T. fan for almost 30 years now. Resisted buying his 1,000 year gig for awhile because I thought myself a "purist". I wanted to hear HIS music, not other's music performed by his majesty, the king of guitar and songwriting. Fellow members of the flock urged me to partake of this recording. I resisted. Then finally, having heard a cut or two online, I bought the whole deal. Sat back, listened to the first few cuts and said: "Oh, my god." Who else but Richard could appreciate, carefully select, and then gloriously reproduce music from the past ages? My teen daughter even smiled over the Brittany Spears cover. RT is all about integrity and respect for music -- even music we might not appreciate until he touches it!

THis cd is really great. I enjoy Don WIlliams Wild Mt Thyme very much, but members of my family think it should have went to a woman. Wait...that's the thing that makes this cd not awesome, the women singing tradtional male songs. It seems bothersome, especially Roseann Cash. But all in all, I do love the cd.

Celtic Christmas: A Windham Hill Sampler

by: Various Artists

Release Date September 12, 1995
The good thing about any of the Celtic Christmas CDs is that they don't feature any traditional, commercialized Christmas Carols. Therefore, you can play them as soon as Fall comes around and continue until the last snow melts.

by: Tim O'Brien

Release Date May 04, 1999
Seriously, this recording (and it's follow up "Two Journeys") are treasures.

ALL of the real heavies from both Celtic music and bluegrass are on this record. Seriously, from Earl Scruggs to Altan- they're all here. Others have attempted the same Celtic/bluegrass hybrid but THIS is the best.

My favorite track is the utterly chilling story of Irish- American soldier of fortune "John Riley." The music was written by Tim with lyrics by Guy Clark and features REALLY SCARY slide guitar from Kelly Joe Phelps.

And then when you realize that it's a true story....

Every schoolkid in America (or Ireland) should get to hear this recording.

And then be sure to check out "Two Journeys."

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Gaelic Storm

Release Date June 19, 2001
Tree by Gaelic Storm is an amazing album with such vivid sounds. The use of celtic instruments with a touch of American modernism brings this album to its full potential in a new age of sounds and harmony. With such tracks as "Swimmin' In The Sea" and "Johnny Tarr" the band shows its ability to play songs that make the listener feel good. This album makes you wish you were Irish. With the addition of a female voice, the sounds call even more to the listener. "Mary's Eyes" reveals the celtic sentiment and "Black Is the Colour" boasts of romantic appeal. These tracks are a great example of the talent and diverse sounds that make up Gaelic Storm.

by: Steeleye Span

Release Date August 08, 1989
The sheer aural beauty of much of this album cannot be adequately stated in words. This is not (with the possible exception of 'Spotted Cow') a 'pop' folk album. This is an attempt to create great music. Maddy Prior's vocal in the haunting 'Sheepcrook and Blackdog'is one of those rare musical moments that can transport the listener to that special realm of pure emotional pleasure which constitutes one of the most profound experiences possible. The bouncing happiness of 'Royal Forrester' shows how little great rythm depends on a thudding drum. 'King Henry' also features a driving drum-less rythm with a wonderful duet. The two a cappella songs, 'Rosebud in June', and 'Guadete'are as different as shivering and infinity. Rosebud successfully evokes the hardship of rural struggles ... Read More:

Clannad: Greatest Hits

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional British and Celtic Folk
by: Clannad

Release Date January 25, 2000
If you like Enya then you will like Clannad. This is where Enya got her start (most if not all are relatives of hers) and although Clannad's music is more upbeat "traditional Irish music" than Enya's, there is still a more "etherial" sound to many of their songs. Some songs are in English and some are in Irish, but they are all great music.

by: Steve McDonald

Release Date February 01, 1996
This album is best enjoyed with two fingers of 15 year old Laphroaig....

This was my first McDonald CD. I listened to it when I first bought it, didn't like it, and put it in my closet for almost 8 years. I then "re-discovered" it and love it. It's a bit different that most other celtic ablums I have, but it's uniqueness makes it good. As others have said before, Loch Lamond is by far the most powerful song on the CD. McDonald's remake itself is worth the album.
