Moodfood

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: Moodswings

Release Date September 15, 1992
From beginning to end, Moodfood by Moodswings takes one on an incredible journey. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best compilations of music ever produced. It is indeed, as the subtitle states: "Aural medication for tired minds." I have listened to the entire album, from beginning to end many times, and I have learned something new about myself; spiritually, mentally and physically, everytime I hear it anew.

CD-Charts Music : I Am the Blues

I Am the Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: Willie Dixon

Release Date February 01, 2008
How can you give Willie Dixon less than five stars? The man has played on some of the greatest blues recordings in history and he has written some of the genre's most memorable songs. Recorded in Chicago during the summer of 1969, the album only features one third of the material recorded in that session. The band featured Johnny Shines on guitar, Walter "Shakey" Horton on harmonica, Clifton James on drums, either Sunnyland Slim or Lafayette Leake on piano, and of course Willie Dixon on bass and vocals. If you're looking for instrumental flash, this is not for you. However, Willie's deep growl is pleasant, it has a great beat, and every single song is a classic!

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: Muddy Waters

Release Date May 18, 2004
Not much new I can say about a classic, but I will say that it's very rare anymore to listen to a band and say to yourself, "Hey, these guys sound like they're having a real good time". In a world dominated by plastic sounding music(Plastic People! Oh, baby now you're such a draaaaaag! Sorry about that, I couldn't resist), it's so refreshing to listen to a group that doesn't sound like it's playing music simply because it's their job. Now while this was an attempt for Muddy to make a comeback, these guys sound like they love what they're doing so much that they couldn't care less if they sold one copy of the album, or even gave a hoot if they were being recorded at all! Muddy had a fantastic musical career long before this album, but in teaming up ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Best of Etta James

The Best of Etta James

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: Etta James

Release Date March 25, 1997
When songwriters Harry Warren and Mack Gordon had their composition At Last become the B-side to the 1942 Glenn Miller # 1 hit (I've Got A Gal In) Kalamazoo, they probably thought they had died and gone to Heaven. Especially when it too charted at a respectable # 14 with Ray Eberle doing the vocals. A decade later they struck paydirt again when the song was resurrected in the movie Orchestra Wives and then taken to # 2 by Ray Anthony & his orchestra, with Tommy Mercer doing the vocal.

But in my humble opinion the best was yet to come, and when a 23-year-old from Los Angeles by the name of Jamesetta Hawkins decided to record it in 1961 under her stage name Etta James, from that point on it became HER song. It may not have done as well on the Billboard ... Read More:

Burnside on Burnside

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: R.L. Burnside

Release Date October 23, 2001
I'm a young guy and just scratching the service on blues legends like R.L. Burnside. This is the first CD of his I've bought and I'm extremely happy that I purchased it.
R.L. has an absolutely perfect blues voice. His guitar playing along with Kenny Brown is incredible. The slide guitar is one of my favorite sounds on earth and they play it to perfection throughout the album.
My favorite songs are Shake Em' on Down, Rollin' and Tumblin', Goin' Down South, Skinny Women (which is covered by a great band named the The Black Keys they call their version "Busted"), and Bad Luck and Trouble. But my very favorite is Walkin' Blues. It's the total package. It's perfect in vocals, lyrics, emotion, slide guitar, and everything in between. I can't get enough of that ... Read More:

This is a decent JLH disc. Great music, which is no surprise. But then I got to the song 'My Dream.' Blew me away. Just something about this one that makes me want to get a good stiff drink and drift away for a bit.

The sound is a little old-fashioned, but the playing remains of interest. Not as flamboyant as many of the modern players - just good, solid blues that is consistently entertaining. A classic.

by: Mississippi John Hurt

Release Date May 18, 2004
While it isn't listed on the notes or anywhere else, CD#1 actually has 18 tracks, not 17. Not only that, this 18th track is the best of the entire 36: It is called "Nobody's Dirty Business" and is stellar to say the least. Put this 2cd set in your car's cd player, and you can drive from Boston to East Boise and still not get tired of it.
