A roommate of mine would play this CD on Saturday mornings while she was cooking breakfast and after hearing it a couple times from my room I would come out and sit just to listen. Somehow the music fit the mood of late morning mixed with the aroma of eggs and such. Now I have it for myself and Jolie Holland's sad, satirical, yet energetic music is a memory into that time. Thanks Marit.

What a concert CD! "Breakin' it Up, Breakin' it Down" features the vocals of three pretty good bluesmen--Muddy Waters, James Cotton, and Johnny Winter. Waters and Winter also play guitar, and James Cotton is referred to as "Superharp" in the notes accompanying the CD. Also in the group: Bob Margolin (guitar and vocals), Pinetop Perkins (vocals and piano), Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drum), and Charles Calmese (Bass). They play awfully well together. . . .
Bob Margolin wrote to notes. At one point he says of this CD: "[The CD] showcases each of these [three] blues legends leading the band, but more important historically, and much more fun, we find them jamming together, pushing, teasing, and inspiring one another."

On first listening, you might think that this is simply an album of 'grooved out' Texas swamp-rock (are there many swamps in Texas?), but there is more to the music than just this. As much as anything, it's the sardonic humour of RWH's lyrics (often delivered with an air of nonchalance) that will command your attention; 'Ramona's got a keen sense of humor', but she's not the only one - RWH also has his moments (in fact, a good few of them). Also, the songs can be thought of as a series of mini character studies covering an assortment of individuals (including the Devil Incarnate) with dubious backgrounds, questionable morality and less than honourable intentions.
A couple of reviewers feel that many of the songs sound the same. To an extent, I'd go along ... Read More:

I'v been avoiding writing a review about these dvd's (American Folk & blues festival vol 1, Vol 2, vol 3,) for a while now, mainly because I get so emotional when I think about them. So I wont even try. But I will say this much....The ONLY place in the world where you can see the fabulous T-Bone Walker on dvd... is on these sets (he appears on all 3 volumes). And where else are you gonna see Lonnie Johnson, Shakey Horton, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, Willie Dixon, Otis Span, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Mama Thorton, A very young Buddy Guy, and a very young Hubert Sumlin, Big Joe Turner, Son House, Koko Tayler, Lightnin Hopkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Howlin Wolf, AND MANY MORE!!! YOU NEED TO HAVE ALL 3 VOLUMES FOR YOUR COLLECTION!

Only diehard audiophiles will find fault with this release. Believe me, the sound is just fine. All but one track were 24-bit digitally remastered at Capitol between 2003 and 2005, while track 27 is a 1991 Elektra Entertainment Group production.
Tracks 2 to 6 are by The King Cole Trio consisting of Nat, guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Johnny Miller. Track 10 is by The King Cole Trio consisting of Nat, guitarist Irving Ashby and bassist Joe Comfort. Track 20 is by The King Cole Trio consisting of Nat, guitarist John Collins and bassist Charlie Harris.
All this is contained in the 28 page insert containing six pages of notes by daughter Natalie, numerous candid photos of Nat and his family, in performance, touring, etc., including one in studio with Natalie, ... Read More:
