Being a new fan to Bluegrass thanks to David Davis and the Warrior River Boys, I wanted to find some music that was strictly mandolin. In my search I found Mr. Butch Baldassari and his incredible music! A find it was! I needed to go no further in my search and highly recommend any of Mr. Baldassari's work! I bought three that day (this one, Mandolin Hymns, and Duets for Mandolin and Guitar) and love them all. This CD is invigorating and a truly incredible showcase. Mr. Baldassari is fighting an inoperable brain tumor. Purchasing this CD would be a great way to show him and his family support. It's a joy to have!

John Lee Hooker: The Ultimate Collection 1948-1990 is one of the best, if not the best anthologies of the blues master early work and some of his later work.
Hooker, who because of legal entanglements, recorded under a lot of different names (John Lee Cooker, etc...), is one of the alltime greats, able to evoke haunting tones and moods on some songs, while kicking off a rocking boogie vibe in others. Just about all of the blues standards that he is known for are on this collection - Boogie Children, Crawling Kingsnake Blues, House Rent Boogie, One Bourbor, One Scotch, Onr Beer, and many others.
If you want to get the best representation of his early era, and pickup his later comeback material elsewhere, this is a great ... Read More:

Francis "Scrapper" Blackwell was not only one of the legendary pre-war virtouosos - who, as Leroy Carr's guitarist, essentially defined what is now called "urban blues" - but a capable singer-songwriter, too. In this album he essentialy re-visited some of his pre-war material (e.g. "Penal Farm Blues", his first 78rpm single) and managed to create an album which, I think, should be included in every collection that prouds to have gone deep into the blues.
Although age had by then left visible signs on Blackwell's voice, he is at least moving singing "Goin' Where The Monon Crosses The Yellow Dog", and also in moments like "Little Boy Blue" or "Shady Lane". But, although these are good reasons to buy this album themselves, the most stunning performance ... Read More:

Applies her now distinctive fusion-Delta steel, jazz, deep funkiness, and the voice-to a wide range of songs, making them all her own. Many reveal the originals only with close attention. Most coherent collection of her settings that I can recall-all as quiet but insistent and vital as the sound of your blood passing in your veins. The jazz-funk-country blues captures the calm of night in a swamp, but also the vague foreboding of a primordial presence there. Lyrics of tr 1 by Sting capture the mood of the cd as a whole: "Like rain from the stars, how fragile we are." That said, I repeatedly hear her voice as another instrument in the mix before I hear any words. [53:29]

I have only listened to a couple of Eric Bibb's recording but I do find them enjoyable. He is not as "pop" as say Keb Mo. If you appreciate fingerstyle arrangements of ballad type songs you will enjoy this. This is more in the folk /blues vain of say Mississippi John Hurt as opposed to Robert Johnson. Again Buy This CD.

Coming of age in the sixties with a guitar in your hand, it was impossible to ignore Bert's work. Solo, with John Renbourne, in Pentangle, or reflected in the work of early Paul Simon (covering Anji) or Jimmy Page (appropriating Black Waterside), his influence was enormous. Sparkling fingerwork, an authentic vocal sound, and brilliant, eclectic compositions make this a must-have CD for anyone who wants to know about the roots of the late 20th century popular acoustic guitar sound. If only we could get rid of those drums....without them this would be a 5 star album.

Good old typical New Orleans music from one of the old standby musicians. I am from New Orleans and this rekindles a lot of nostalgia in me.

This is an excellent compilation of Odetta's best stuff. The collection covers her years with Tradition Records to Vanguard Records. This will satisfy both the soulful, gospel fan, as well as as some folk legends such as Bob Dylan.

Like ice cream pizza, Hooker 'n' Heat is a pairing of two great things that doesn't quite work. The record company realized that the original 2-disc Hooker 'N' Heat release was overbloated, so they pared it down to this 1-disc....but it's still just not worth the money.
Find a Hooker compilation that includes "Burning Hell" (which is nearly ANY Hooker compilation) and you're good to go.
