CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: Mississippi John Hurt

Release Date May 18, 2004
While it isn't listed on the notes or anywhere else, CD#1 actually has 18 tracks, not 17. Not only that, this 18th track is the best of the entire 36: It is called "Nobody's Dirty Business" and is stellar to say the least. Put this 2cd set in your car's cd player, and you can drive from Boston to East Boise and still not get tired of it.

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: George Gershwin

Release Date May 12, 1998
This Gershwin collection is divided into two CDs; the first has many of his more popular pieces from Broadway productions, and the second has a selection of his symphonic works. Some of the songs on the first CD are performed by singers such as Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bing Crosby, and sound absolutely spectacular. Unfortunately, the compilers opted for some lesser know and less talented names for several of the tracks, rendering about a quarter of the CD mediocre. The one pick that really didn't fit in, however, was Audrey Hepburn's rendition of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" Audrey Hepburn, despite all her wonderful acting talent, simply cannot sing, and listening to the entire song even once is a difficult thing to force ... Read More:

Release Date April 23, 1996
One more voice in loving praise of this wonderful record. I just tonight got a copy of this CD re-release. The earlier CD release had the artists/track titles mislabeled, as did the original vinyl, if I recall correctly. It is important to note for the newer listener that John Fahey re-recorded a couple of his works specifically for this recording. One can now 'collect' perhaps 6 different versions of In Christ There Is No East or West, if the "Guitar, Guitar" television segment on the "In Concert" DVD is counted. I treasure all the different versions of his pieces, and seeing how he evolved (rather than renamed) some pieces. I think he introduced On the Sunny Side of the Ocean here, and this version of Sunflower River Blues is somewhat evolved from his earlier ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Traditional Blues
by: John Lee Hooker

Release Date October 20, 1998
Though Hooker is a legend, someone with a little more time, could have certainly put together, something better than this. If I was John Lee, I certainly would have wanted something a lot stronger, and wilder, to be my swan song. One song in particular makes me want to use some magical power to get it off the CD, and that's "Tupelo". Being forced to listen to that, is like listening to your 6th grade teacher sloooowwwllly scratch her nails on a blackboard. If your image of Hooker, is him, playing a song, in the original "Blues Brother's" movie, stomping his feet in the street, shaking up, the entire city of Chicago, then don't get this CD, because it will ruin your memories of him!

Release Date September 09, 2003
WHAT TO ME WAS DISAPPOINTING ABOUT THIS CD IS THE FACT THAT THESE ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL SKIP JAMES RECORDINGS MADE IN THE 1920'S AND 1930'S WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A COUPLE OF SONGS. HAVING SAID THAT, I AM GLAD THAT I HAVE THESE RECORDINGS. AND I LOVE THE COVER ART BY R. CRUMB. SKIP JAMES WAS NOT YOUR AVERAGE SOUNDING DELTA BLUESMAN, HE HAD A SOUND ALL HIS OWN.
