I don't know the complete story behind this record in reference to it being a hoax or a put-on or who played what. What I do know is that it's my favorite John Fahey record, and if that makes me less enlightened than the average Fahey fan, I can live with that.
I don't think it's important that this record spends less time spotlighting Fahey's guitar virtuosity than is normally the case. This is a record that's about a certain ambience created by collage, and the fact that Fahey uses unknown accompanists and found sounds makes it no less authentic or personal than his other guitar-only recordings that the Byronic Fahey enthusiasts long for. What's essentially important about the record is that Fahey was responsible for it, assembled ... Read More:

Having just purchased and listened to this album all the way through, I'd like to point out three things not mentioned in any of the previous reviews...
1) Chuck Berry does not sing on this album. I don't know why the description includes him, but he wouldn't have fit in with this group at all. However,
2) Beyond "the big three" vocalists featured on the album cover, the liner notes also inform us that the backing band included Buddy Guy on bass, Hubert Sumlin on rhythm guitar, and Otis Spann on piano-- three bona fide musical legends in their own right. Folks, that's $1 for every blues legend on this disc! That's what I call a bargain!
3) Although many of the songs here were sung on other recordings by these musicians, ... Read More:

Some of John Lee Hooker's best known songs are compiled from his many years and albums onto this budget CD, with not one being one you will skip over. From "Boogie Chillen'" to "Boom, Boom," they are all here. Even the songs which made others famous, such as "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."
"I'm Bad Like Jesse James" is a favorite of mine, with this particular song showing his inimitable rambling style so strikingly, a style which over the years can be found less and less.
It should be noted that the version of "I'm in the mood" on this album is different than the Chess side he recorded with the Chess brothers (I actually prefer the more polished Chess side). But regardless, each song is representative of a different time in his life, as ... Read More:

Interestingly, it was recently revealed that the three new tracks on this CD are NOT John Fahey, but a high-school teacher and student of the guitar great, Charlie Schmidt. Apparently, the songs were recorded in 1993 as part of a joke that Fahey wanted to play on his record label at the time. Fantasy records found the recordings after Fahey's death, and was totally fooled.

From beginning to end, Moodfood by Moodswings takes one on an incredible journey. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best compilations of music ever produced. It is indeed, as the subtitle states: "Aural medication for tired minds." I have listened to the entire album, from beginning to end many times, and I have learned something new about myself; spiritually, mentally and physically, everytime I hear it anew.

The reviews above just about sum it up: great collection, nice selection of songs, and I hear the booklet is great. I bought my box set from another seller and it came without the book. Anyone wishing to sell one or know of a place to get it, please contact me!

After 27 years recording for Chess Records, this April 1975 album was Muddy's last for the label - and I think it's a bit of a forgotten gem.
PAUL BUTTERFIELD provides fabulous bluesy Harmonica throughout, PINETOP PERKINS plays piano (guest vocals also on Kansas City & Caldonia) with both GARTH HUDSON and LEVON HELM of THE BAND throwing in Keyboards/Accordion and Drums/Bass respectively. While it's a straight-up blues album for the most part, Hudson's Accordion playing gives some of the tracks a slightly swing/Cajun feel - and is a genuine surprise and treat for it too. Special mention should also go to Paul Butterfield's harmonica playing, which is fantastic throughout - clearly enthused by the mere proximity of the great man! In fact in each guest musician, you can 'feel' ... Read More:
