I have played this CD until it's worn out. Her voice is beautiful and still is. I recommend this CD if your just starting out listening to her music. ENJOY!!!!

Muddy is always great but this CD is a little sad. I bought it when it first came out and it was disappionting then. I think it an attempt to cash in on white performers sucess with "electric" versions of classic blues tunes. The fuzz-tone guitars are just out of place with Muddy's robust blues voice. It has some historical value given the unique nature of the collaboration but other than that forget it. For the real thing get "Mississippi Muddy Waters" a great live album with Pinetop Perkins and Johnny Winter. It's 100 proof.

My wife and I had been eyeing this boxset for a few years now and she finally broke down and got it for me this past holiday season. It's a nice mix of country, blues, gospel, cajun/zydeco, tejano and native American. Overall, the box set is excellent. I don't think there is a bad tune on there, but I do feel it felt short on gospel, folk, cajun, zydeco, tejano and native American styles. There's only about 6 or 7 tracks for each of those styles where an entire 16-19 track disc is dedicated to both country and blues. The set should have been 6 discs instead or it should have been limited to just country and blues. Likewise, I felt it strange that an American Roots boxset included no jazz, for jazz is the only true first American born music, which is ... Read More:

This is a pretty decent compilation, better than most. Get rid of the Ozark Mt. Deredevils and the John Melloncamp (gag!), add some Blackfeet and Doc Holiday- and you could really have a great album. For the best compilations- I would recommend Southern Rock Gold and This is Siouthern Rock!

First, I'm grateful that John Lee spent the final years of his life sharing his music with the world. I'm not even going to get into an argument about whether this is "pure" JLH in light of the guest musicians. I challenge anyone to listen to "This Is Hip," featuring Ry Cooder, and find fault. The same holds true for "Crawlin' Kingsnake," with Keith Richards and Canned Heat's Larry Taylor. When this album came out in 1991 it was a very welcome blast of John Lee, who STILL didn't care what they allowed...he boogied anyhow. He was still full of attitude and rocked harder than most musicians half his age.

This collection is much better than "The Complete Recordings." I don't need two takes of the same song. This CD includes only the best version of each song, and I agree with their selections.

Reading all the gushing positive reviews, I'm sitting here scratching my head, wondering whether they're perhaps listening to a different CD than what I have. When I first put on this album, it sounded fairly exciting. With the beefy blues riffs and funky beats, I thought I was in for a good time. But the truth is, once you hear the first ten seconds of any track, you've heard it all. This isn't minimalism, it's just simplicity. There's little variety, no depth, and when you hear the initial phrase of any given track repeat for the nth time, you can't help but wonder - what's the point? I have to give credit to Lyrics Born though - the two tracks that he raps on are hands down the best, though even they follow the rinse/repeat formula. It's too bad that his flows couldn't ... Blind Lemon is one of the great originators of Country Blues and some of his greatest songs are present here. Sadly, some are absent, but this is still one of the best collections of Lemon's stuff.
Obviously, the sound quality is not going to be amazing given the age of the recordings, but it isn't as bad as on Founder of the Delta Blues (which is still a good collection, but none of Patton's stuff is easy to listen to because, even for it's time, the equipment used to record him was not the greatest apparently).
If someone invents a time machine, I want them to go and pick up Lemon and Charley and others and bring them to a 2007 studio. It would be great!
