I see this album compared to its predecessor, The System Has Failed, more often than not. Personally, I can't hear the similarities. The System Has Failed had some really inspired tracks with some great solos by both Mustaine and Poland. Untied Abominations on the other hands has only a few good songs and a few good solos from Mustaine and Glen Drover. Shawn Drover sounds stiff and out of place to me, but others appear to dig him so maybe I'm the black sheep of the Megafans.
The production of this album doesn't do it any favors either. Its not bad but it lacks balls, the entire albums feels really squashed and small. The System Has Failed also had some production issues but it still had a sound that had some size to it.

I bought a copy of this album when it first came out in 94. Almost 15 yrs later, it still sounds riveting and fresh. This truly is an uncompromising masterpiece in hardcore heavy metal. The music has enormous amount of aggression, rhythmic energy, power and anger, all wrapped up in a great sound editing/mastering/overall production. The musicianship shown by each member and the band as a whole is utterly tremendous and puts to shame other hardcore metal bands that are less disciplined in execution. Sloppiness plaguing in hardcore metal could no longer be an excuse after Pantera.

Machine Head have had a bit of an up-and-down career, with a few missteps along the way, but when they're firing on all cylinders, you better get out of their way. Leader and vocalist Robb Flynn, possibility the angriest metaller out there right now, is a superb songwriter, which is too often overlooked in metal circles, with many outfits getting attention with unimaginative repetitive riffs and singers who sound like they're suffering from a bad case of irritable bowel syndrome.
Flynn does his share of growling, but also provides clear vocals and harmonies, which add the one element modern metal needs the most, dynamics. Not that "The Blackening" is a wimped out affair. This slab is heavy - like the Titanic sinking in your living room heavy. ... Read More:

This video, while recorded by fans on various camcorders in the 1980s, is probably the best home video compilation documenting a band there is. This video takes you through the days before Kill 'em All, with interviews, performances, and photos all the way into the Master of Puppets tour. There are even clips with Dave Mustaine on lead guitar at Cliff's 2nd gig with the band.
Some people will complain about the quality of the audio and video. For those people I say:
1) What footage exists of this band during this time period with better quality audio / video?
2) This is supposed to be an amateur video compilation.
If you haven't seen Metallica with Cliff Burton, this is definitely worth adding to your collection.

Metallica is great, this product displays them at their near worst. Pandering to the crowd, playing with the lights on for the first few songs, asking if the crowd wants "heavy". Give me a break. Metallica never needed to do anything but go up on stage and crank the stuff out, so why they resorted to these tactics I don't know. Other than they are playing to the cameras, which every band does, but this is a little out of character. I don't understand the glowing reviews here. I frankly feel the audience got shortchanged and didn't experience a true Metalli-show where it's all black, all music, all fist pumping, all the time. And the stupid camera-angle-change feature of my DVD didn't work. More marketing to the masses I suppose.

One of my favorites so far this year. not a bad song on the disc. It must be played loud to really enjoy it. My favorites are "Into: The other Side" and "All the Kings Horses". The musianship and vocals are top notch. I liked their first disc but this one really surprised me how good it is.

I really think it's time to stop whining about this album. Rust In peace is an unbelievable classic. This remaster, on the whole, sounds better than the original (as you'd expect with a remaster), and the new vocals couldn't be helped. Vocal track tapes went missing for certain songs, and so alternate takes from 1990 were used for the songs Five Magics and Lucretia, and Take No Prisoners had to be resung. Considering the 14 year gap between the original recording of RIP and the resung vocals on TNP, Dave Mustaine's 2004 vocals on the track stand up very well. Whether you like these alternate vocals or not is down to the individual, but surely it's time to stop moaning about something that just couldn't be helped. The remastering and remixing of these albums was a great job, and the remasters ... Read More:
