CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: Venom

Release Date January 02, 2006
This is the sort of music that made parents hate heavy metal, even though bands like Black Sabbath got more press because of it. Of course, that's because a lot of people had never heard of Venom. I was listening to Slayer and Morbid Angel long before I ever owned a Black Sabbath album, so by the time I attempted to listen to Sabbath's quasi-dark image coupled with Ozzy's whining for God to help him it just appalled me; it seemed like the whole band and their image was a sham. I couldn't understand why anyone liked them. I still can't stand Ozzy's voice, and if it weren't for sort of fun songs like "Sweet Leaf," I wouldn't have taken the time to try to listen to Sabbath at all. On the other hand, despite cheesy, tongue in cheek lyrics, Venom ... Read More:

This is easily the best album Metallica has ever come out with and will ever come out with. There is not one bad song on this album. From Battery to Damage Inc., it is headbanging heaven. If you do not have the album, buy it. Buy it now. Thank me later.

Them

CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: King Diamond

Release Date November 11, 1997
Crucial. I believe this album to be a crucial piece of heavy metal history. While I had heard rumblings about King Diamond prior to hearing this, the late-night video of "Welcome Home" was my formal introduction to the King's music back in 1988 on the original Headbanger's Ball, then hosted by Adam Curry. While it's hard to remember finite details of what I was thinking at that moment, I clearly remember thinking that King Diamond stood out amongst that metal had to offer back then. When my brother used his paper route money to buy the cassette of "Them", my friends and I all deemed the album to be a classic on the spot.....20 years ago.

It's hard to imagine that "Them" came out 20 years ago. When you listen to many of today's new crop of metal ... Read More:

Cryptic Writings

CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: Megadeth

Release Date July 27, 2004
This album is an easy 4 stars, but the new remix/remaster is vastly inferior to the original mix. Hunt down the original and avoid this new version at all costs. The reason for the remix/remaster is perplexing for a couple of reasons. First, the original producer (forgot his name) is one of the best producers ever and has more than 80 million record sales to his credit. Secondly, Cryptic Writings was recorded on state-of-the-art digital equipment (back in 1997). At only 11 years old, it really amazes me that they would even take the time to remaster, let alone remix it. That being said, the new remix is HORRIBLE. The guitar tone has much more mid and lacks the crunch of the original. Back when this first came out I was trying for months to achieve this type of ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: Megadeth

Release Date July 27, 2004
I realize I need to update the reviews for one of my favorite bands of all time, Megadeth. So I decided to start with the worst.

I just don't know where to start with this one. This is when Megadeth were in the nadir of the bands career. They were writing stuff that was the equivalent of throwing slop against the wall to see if they could get something to stick and get some airplay. Megadeth was never a radio-band, so I guess one could make a case for this being the all-out attempt to sell out. I give them respect for at least being musically up-front about it I guess. They had clearly traded anything about them that made them great back in their heyday. It's amazing that this is the same lineup that recorded "Rust in Peace".

You know, I believe ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: Shadows Fall

Release Date September 21, 2004
I had stayed out of the metal scene for a while cause I thought it sucked with slow bands without solos. This album, along with some others, is what brought me back into metal. This album blew my mind away. Every song on it is awesome. NOT just mindless screaming or riffs that don't go anywhere or solos that sound like the guitarist didn't even listen to the song before playing it. It's melodic, heavy, fast, it will melt your face off.

CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: Sepultura

Release Date March 12, 1996
I popped this in after having spent almost 10 years away from it... and I have to say that this album inspires.

It is not as technical as any of their previous works, but does leap off where Chaos AD left off.

The goal here... was a return to simplicity. We all know they can write technically inspired and classical riffs... they knew that too. The goal is no more apparent than when you look at the cover and title of the album. The fact remains that an album of this type has not been repeated by any other band since.

The riffing is very simplistic at times, but to beat the dead horse: that was the point. I challenge metal listeners to find another song that sounds like Itsari... the native singing and dancing combined with some well-crafted Spanish ... Read More:

I remember when this album came out. Yes, I still have it on vinyl. LOL.
Great album, great songs, lyrics are a tad corny all these years later.
For fans of the genre, not for the mainstream.
Another excellent offering from Kreator.

CD-Charts > Music > Thrash and Speed Metal
by: Motörhead

Release Date January 13, 1998
The 1990s saw a real resurgence of Motorhead. After Eddie Clarke quit in 1982, the band seemed to struggle for the rest of the 80s. No release was really "bad", but Another Perfect Day was a largely failed experiment, and Orgasmatron and Rock n Roll were warm ups runs (albeit good ones). With 1991's "1916" album however the band definitely found a sound to equal, even exceed the original Lemmy/ Clarke/ Taylor souund.

1995's Sacrifice is in my opinion the highest point of the post Clarke era. It's probably their most consistent album of the 90s. There are probably some songs on other albums that I like better, but as a whole, I find that this is an album where I seldom skip anything.

It's also notable for being probably Motorheads heaviest. Of course all Motorhead albums ... Read More:
