A great artist in his exuberant, "Basieish" youth, Lester Young often proved that in his mature years he could add to the subtlety and feeling, without sacrifising any of the rhythmical power.
How could anyone ever have believed that his post WW-II years were a throwaway alltogether?
Here, propelled by Peterson's fine group, The Pres swings hard, starting with the mighty "Ad Lib Blues" but in the very next song, beautiful ballad "I Can't Get Started", shows the greatest strength of his playing on this CD. The name of the game is emotion, reached through mellodic innovativeness and rhythmical subtlety.
Interestingly enough, in the company of a more emotional Teddy Wilson on another masterpiece from the 50's (Pres ... Read More:

Perennial Favorites, in my book, is the best album to begin with for a potential fan of the NC-based hot-jazz-jump-blues-dixieland-funk outfit. It's got classic '20s-style jazz (Suits Are Picking..., Pallin'), spooky 2-step cabaret (Stephen Foster, My Drag), more calypso in the vein of "Hell" (Trou Macacq), and the occasional avant-garde-leaning delight (Kraken).
It's the most stylistically diverse and satisfying album. It's the last full-length one to feature Tom Maxwell, and Jimbo and Katharine shine as always. A veritable collector's item.

Because Ms Krall is accompanied by some outstanding musicians of the jazz genre I presume she is concerned to be recognized as a jazz singer and a jazz pianist. If this is so then I have to say her nasal twang, indifferent rhythmic sense, and poor understanding of the lyric makes her an indifferent jazz interpreter of the great american song book. To take "I've Got the World On A String" as an example, it may as well be sung by a computer. Embarrassing. As for her piano playing then she is an accomplished cocktail pianist but to place her in the jazz pantheon would be a considerable leap of pure faith.
On the slower tunes, she is more successful in a cutesy way as on "Squeeze Me". But I would think she must be the most overrated "jazz" artist of the ... Read More:

I liked this recording as pleasurable listening, notwithstanding that the singing is not in English except for the last selection (Barcelona, from Sodheim's Company). My two favorite selections were the truly beautiful rendition of La Paloma and the delightful and humorous Barcelona. Since the recording was of a live performance, there is audience applause after a number of the selections, and for me this distracts from the enjoyment of it.

Excellent variety of foxtrots and waltzes for dancing practice. All waltzes are grouped together at the end of the recording. Great value.

From the start of Nelson Riddle's "Theme from Route 66" this album jumps out @ the listener, with this being easily one of the BEST TV themes ever produced, very catchy and very cool, more reminiscent of just a hip lounge piece and is perfect to introduce this package. John Buzon's "Caravan" is another fun spin on what is one of the several out there of this great tune, this one being played a bit like a rhumba! Line Renaud's "Sexe" is nothing special but it's very slick and is a little like something that would have come from the cavern clubs during the beat era. I can't say enough about Lou Busch's jazzy "Cool", adapted from the already jazz-cool Bernstein musical "West Side Story". This is just another good rendition offered, although here instrumental and really ... Read More:
