I'm not saying 'The Essential Charlie Parker' is bad at all. It's actually superb, if I'm being honest. But, I can't give this five stars. Why, you may ask?
Well, there are just so many better options. Now I realize that to many, this is the ideal Parker collection and this is the one that people buy. But there are box sets, regular compilations, you name it.
My advice is buy the single disc 'Ken Burns JAZZ: Charlie Parker.' That spans 1941-1952, his entire career basically, and includes all of his classics.
And, most of the songs here are on that one as well. And that one adds some of his duets with Dizzy Gillespie (like 'Salt Peanuts) and his early years with Jay McShann.

This era of music, the late 90's swing revival (like Cherry Popping Daddies)... not sure what to call it ("nu-swing"?) is not an style that I got into. During the late 90's, I was listening to a lot of Marilyn Manson and Megadeth. Now that my musical tastes have mellowed out, I am turning to Michael Buble, Paul Anka, Herb Alpert, and other smoother artists.
For years, I loved the song "Hey, Pachuro!" on this album without knowing where it came from. Every time I saw "The Mask", I made a mental not to look up the song. A few weeks ago, I finally did it, tracked down this album, and decided to check it out. I am glad I did! "Mugzy's Move" is a fun romp. The music itself is upbeat and bouncy.

If your a Peterson fan, this is the 'loin cut'.In this well-rounded collection, there are two trio formats, including the high calibre playing of SAM JONES and RAY BROWN,BOBBY DURHAM,ED THIGPEN,AND LOUIS HAYES on bass and drums respectively. All provide exceptional support throughout this collection. And in addition,Peterson presents us with a beautiful set of solo piano pieces which could well be considered the 'companion' to his other brilliant solo recording,'TRACKS'.This comes very highly reccommended, as it represents the quintessential example of piano performances in the trio and solo platforms at the very highest level from one of the greatest legends of the piano in modern jazz history. Highlights for me were 'AT LAST LONG LOVE',and'TIN TIN ... Read More:

The seller sent me an e-mail, where he apologized for not sending me the disc. He said that the CD was damaged during a move. I am happy that he notified me about this.

If you love the swing era, this DVD is for you. Not only do you have Benny Goodman, but the stars who played with him are what made swing the great period that it was. Gene Kruppa stands out in particular. As this was taken from old movies, the picture quality may not be what one might hope, but I bought the record to listen to the music and I was not disappointed.

Plus it has bongos! What's not to like? It's an ideal disk for background music (with dance possibilities) while you serve up Tiki drinks to your friends on the bamboo-trimmed back patio. Let me recommend the following drink:
Zoom-zoom Zoomette

2oz Dark Jamaican Rum
1oz 151 proof rum
2oz Grapefruit juice
2oz Pineapple juice
Dash of bitters
Juice of one lime, squeezed
Ice
Mix into 20oz ("Venti") Starbucks cup and drink responsibly.

I didn't discover this talented musician (Anita O'Day) until about a week or two before her unfortunate death at age 87. Her unique sound (I think which reminisces at times Judy Garland territory, but that's just a personal opinion), uncanny scatting abilities and amazing sense of swing engaged me enough to dig into her long musical legacy--and, since I adored her take on Miles Davis' "Four" after hearing it, I knew this was the CD to start out with (since it features "Four" as the, of course, fourth track), and it is indeed great. This re-release features the original set list from the first printing of Anita O'Day Sings the Winners and much more. "Four" happens to be my favorite song here and O'Day gives a tremendous performance with some brilliantly written ... Read More:
