Classic Queen

by: Queen

Release Date March 10, 1992
I try not to review best ofs too often but sometimes that's all I own of a group. It occured to me the other day that all the Queen I ever owned in the past I have sold off for cigarettes and beer while living in the cold depths of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

So I ran off to buy me some Queen. I figured I'd start with the most obvious and get all the hits I could. This collection is for sure a great way to start, with the hits like "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "We Will Rock You" etc. I can't stop listening to it. Unfortunetly they had so many hits, they had to put out a second version called "Classic Queen" which has "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Under Pressure" so I bought that one too. There is a remastered Greatest Hits out there ... Read More:

Led Zeppelin-Presence (***1/2)

I usually go through phases with Zeppelin. Long periods of not wanting to hear them but still giving them credit for being one of the greatest bands of all time, and then short (make that extremely short) periods of time where I listen to Led Zeppelin so much I get really sick of them. This just might be the only album in the bands canon that doesn't follow into either of those categories. I think that is due to the fact that I truly believe both Jimmy Page and John Bonham are at their all time best here, this album contains two absolute Zeppelin classics, and what I consider to be their all time best, and the fact that is just an average album which I only pull out once in a blue moon.

The Final Cut

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: Pink Floyd

Release Date May 04, 2004
Most Floyd fans (but not this one) agree that the group did their best work from 1973 to 1979. What to make of the later albums under the Pink Floyd name is a lot more difficult. To some, Roger Waters was the heart and soul of the band; the Final Cut is a masterpiece, or close to it, and the less said about what came afterward the better. To others, the Final Cut was a hideous misstep and the following work was an appropriate return to the "true Floyd style."

I don't really have a dog in that argument - I prefer my Floyd of the late 60s, early 70s vintage. Without getting into whether a "true Floyd style" really exists, this is a nice album that doesn't sound much like their previous work. Despite some stylistic similarities; a lot ... Read More:

by: Queen

Release Date February 12, 1991
With the exception of the over-raunchy "Get Down Make Love" and that horrid remix of "We Will Rock You", every song on this album is a classic. Roger Taylor's "Sheer Heart Attack" is campy punk, but "Fight From the Inside" is more of a funky "message" song (note that he played most of the instruments on both tracks). John's "Who Needs You" features some unique Latino-jazz (with some fine acoustic work from Brian). "Spread Your Wings" is classic Queen, one of those message songs not to let others discourage you, especially jerky bosses whose only concern is that you "sweep up the emerald bar (it didn't sell well as a single, though). Now for the hits "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions"- though they are almost always played together, they are 2 different ... Read More:

Release Date August 27, 2002
"Get yer ya yas out " was such a significant live album but never recognised . It was a magificent collection of tracks that had all theelements you feel when you are there - LIVE. Matt Taylor's guitar was superb on Sympathy for the Devil and was a leap abovethe work of Brian Jones . I cannot getthis CD out of my car and my 12 year old son is as obsessive about this album as I am . Cannot help myself .Don't deny yourself- try it.

Tommy

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
from: Geffen Records

Release Date October 28, 2003
A clinical and seminal meditation on alienation, popularity-seeking, and the decline of Western man encased in a rock opera about a handicapped boy. Albert Einstein spoke of his own "retarded" youth, being withdrawn from the world, and how that aided him in opening new vistas in science. "Tommy" isn't so fortunate.
"Amazing Journey" shows the advantage of Tommy's "retardation" yet shadows of "normalcy" lurk. Pete Townshend's medicinal lyrics bring to mind the Christian sentiment that only one with a child's disposition can enter the Kingdom of G-d.
"Ten years old
With thoughts as bold as thought can be
Loving life and becoming wise
In simplicity

Sickness will surely take the mind
Where minds can't usually go
Come on the amazing ... Read More:

Face Dances

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: The Who

Release Date June 03, 1997
With a return to the 1960s pop sound, the band delivered a classic - You Better You Bet - while working within a framework to allow drummer Kenney Jones to shine.

Daily Records, Don't Let Go the Coat and Another Tricky Day have very appealing hooks, with Cache Cache paced by a bouncy beat. The all-out rocker is John Entwistle's The Quiet One, with How Can You Do It Alone delivering an edginess through Roger Daltrey's lyrical interpretation.

Peaking at #4 on the U.S. album chart, this March 1981 release is bolstered by five bonus tracks. The album demonstrates the art in crafting quality pop music and is an oftentimes overlooked gem in the band's amazing catalog.

by: The Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones

Release Date August 27, 2002
Even in its truncated U.S. version with its blurry cover shot, 1966's "Aftermath," the first Stones album of all-original material, is indispensible. The record is the dividing line between the group as scruffy young Brit blues-and-R&B cover artists, and what would eventually become the most powerful and significant rock band in the world. A large portion of the credit for this is due to Brian Jones, who is at his artistic peak here. Jones' strength was his uncanny skill on all sorts of instruments besides guitar, and his marimba on "Under My Thumb," and sitar on "Paint It, Black" give those two signature Stones tunes, in their original versions, their unique flavor. The material ("Flight 505," "Stupid Girl") was getting dark and misogynistic; it would get much, much darker in the next few ... Read More:

A Day At The Races

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: Queen

Release Date March 05, 1991
Looking back at the 1970s, sometimes many forget how big the band Queen was. Even as Queen moved into the 1980s, while their popularity did slightly decline in the United States, it continued to be very high in Europe. Their performance at Live Aid is widely considered one of the greatest of all-time and their subsequent "Magic" tour is considered one of the all-time greatest concert tours. If it weren't for Freddie Mercury's death in 1992, we might still be talking about Queen being as big a band as the Beatles. When Queen released their 1973 self-titled debut album, it showed all of the signs of greatness to come. This album would show how the band embraced a "theatrical" feel to their music as well as embrace a sound that would evolve into what would become Heavy Metal. The next three albums, "Queen ...
