Tommy (1975 Film)

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
from: Universal

Release Date April 17, 2001
It's bad enough to have the poorly chosen actors trying to sing but to have insanely bad performances from the likes of Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend is unacceptable. What were they trying to do ? Dumb down to Jack Nicolson's singing ? At least Roger Daltrey sings the best of his career here. Really, he is the only reason to see the movie or listen to this tripe. Why and how did Pete manage to mangle 'Amazing Journey' and 'Sparks' so horribly ? And Clapton must have been going through withdrawals while singing 'Eyesight To the Blind.' Oh yeah - Elton does a great job. But skip this until the very end of your Who related purchases. Please.

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: The Rolling Stones

Release Date September 03, 2002
When I bought this collection I was interested in one song that was not on any other Stones album at that time: "We Love You". From the closing of the jail doors (Mick and Keith had been arrested prior to recording this.)
and the dragging of chains to the horns in the background this is just a goofy song. And if it sounds like there are too many voices for the Stones alone - John Lennon and Paul McCartney also sang on this recording. Because the single did not do well in the US (#50 on the Billboard Charts) It was not included on the US release of "Through the Past Darkly (Big Hits, Volume 2)" although the flip side, "Dandelion", was. Since then it has also been included on both "The Singles Collection: The London Years" and "Rolled Gold+: The ... Read More:

Queen

by: Queen

Release Date June 17, 1991
Certainly not as polished as we would later come to expect from Queen albums, this is a fairly solid debut. Obviously, Freddie had a strong voice from the start, and that unmistakable tone of Brian May's guitar is certainly in evidence. The main draw here is, of course, "Keep Yourself Alive." There are other good early songs here as well, such as "Doing Alright," "Liar," and "Great King Rat." Their material and execution would certainly get stronger and continue to evolve, but this is certainly not a bad first album by any means. It's just a little rougher around the edges than later releases.

Coda

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: Led Zeppelin

Release Date August 16, 1994
Led Zeppelin's odds and ends album Coda was released in November of 1982.
How this album came to be, let's set the stage shall we.
In 1980, Led Zeppelin were riding high on the success of In Through the Out Door which was on its way to selling 7 million copies in the US alone (not bad for Zep standards and outsold Led Zeppelin 3 and Presence). The band toured Europe and were selling out venues nightly but then tragedy struck, drummer John Bonham passed away on September 25, 1980 as the band was rehearsing for a US tour. Over two months later, the band broke up after the death of Bonham whose style was hard to replicate and deemed him irreplaceable.
Throughout 1981 and 1982, guitarist Jimmy Page worked on the soundtrack to Death Wish ... Read More:

In Rock: 25th Anniversary (UK)

by: Deep Purple

Release Date June 16, 1995
I'm a big and constant Purple fan and finally added this edition to my collection. There is no comments on this. In Rock is a brilliant foundation-stone of hard rock. We know it. Just some words about this recording I have got.Let me quote [...]
"A remixed and extended anniversary edition was first issued with a slaughtered version of "Living wreck" and a prematurely cut-off version of "Hard lovin' man". This was soon corrected though. In case of doubt, according to Simon Robinson (in DTB 48:7), one way to tell a corrected release from a faulty one is by reading the shiny side of the actual disc: the faulty one says "EMI Swindon" while the corrected one says "EMI Uden". We are told by fans that discs printed with "EMI UK" also are faulty. Happy hunting!" ... Read More:

by: Queen

Release Date November 24, 1998
If you are a Queen fan and still don't have any of their first eight albums, then this is a must buy! Queen was easily one of the best rock bands in the history of the universe!

The albums included were remastered and they are "Queen" (1973), "Queen II" (1974), "Sheer Heart Attack" (1974), "A Night At The Opera" (1975), "A Day At The Races" (1976), "News Of The World" (1977), "Jazz" (1978), and "The Game" (1980).
All these albums are great and show diverse songwriting styles. These guys, (singer/piano player Freddy Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon, and drummer Roger Taylor), were never afraid of trying any style that they could think of. All four members of the group get a chance to show their songwriting skills and with the exception ... Read More:

My Generation: The Very Best of the Who

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: The Who

Release Date August 27, 1996
The Who's music has made classic rock a lot better. Their songs, like 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and 'Magic Bus' still are played on classic rock stations across the country every day.

This set, 1996's 'My Generation: The Very Best of The Who' remains the best single disc compilation, but unlike other bands, The Who cannot really be sized up onto one CD. But, I give MCA credit for trying.

And, despite that, they did a pretty good job. 'My Generation,' 'Magic Bus,' '5:15,' 'I Can't Explain,' 'Who Are You,' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again' all appear on this set. And, MCA did a great job remastering the songs, so the sound quality is supurb.

But there is plenty missing. Where are 'Behind Blue Eyes,' 'Bargain,' 'The Kids Are Alright,' 'Slip Kid,' 'Love ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Supergroups
by: Queen

Release Date February 05, 1991
I know a lot of Queen fans consider this CD to be a classic. I disagree. Although it's not a bad or average CD, it certainly is solid. I am sure most of you are well aware of the circumstances surrounding the making of this CD (Freddie Mercury's last). With that in mind it tends to push this offering into the special category, but it doesn't necessarily make this a "classic" or put in line with their best work. There are some great moments here (Don't try so hard, Headlong, Show must go on & I'm going slightly mad) but there is low points too (Bijou, Ride the wild wind & Delilah) absolute rubbish.
What really stands out about this CD is the production. They managed to recreate the element that was sorely missing through out their 80's releases. The CD sounds grand, open & sonically ... Read More:
