I love this CD. I have 4 kids ranging from 2-10 and I catch them singing these songs a lot. There's a great mix of old hymns and songs my parents and grandparents probably sang. A few of them were new to me. I love connecting my kids to the past and having them sing songs from the generations before them. I also used one of the songs as background when I made a presentation for the nursery at my church. It was a big hit. I got another copy of this CD for the nursery to play for the kids at my church. An enjoyable CD for the whole family. We love it!

the Veleveteen Rabbit has replaced the Alastair Sim version of A Christmas Carol as my annual pre-Christmas recorded entertainment.
if you ever hear a better reading of a story than Meryl Streep does on this CD, please drop me a line and let me know what it is.

I bought this because I am a fan of Clay Aiken. He is so good at reading stories and does a great job of changing his voice to suit the various characters.

Some folks in this world are blessed with a voice which is a pleasure to listen to. Just to hear 'em talk. They could sell ice to Eskimos. I'm not joking. I'm not exaggerating. They got it. They could sing the phonebook and you'd clap along. They tell a stupid story and it sounds like a parable. When I think of this kind of person, I think Joe Strummer. Now that was a talkin' voice if I ever heard one.
Now on the other hand, there's the folks who likes the sound of their OWN voice. Lots of 'em also suffer from Competitive Talk Disorder. I used to play softball with a fella who would interrupt any one of my fleeting nuggets of wisdom with a tale that was 10 times louder, if not 10 times better. He drank strictly Belgian Lambics, and only wore clothes ... Read More:

Good recording. Love Meredith Vieira, although she was a bit low-key in this studio version (a live recording before an audience may have yielded more excitement). It was a good reference for school performance of the piece, both for the musicians and narrator.

Friends of my parents had the audio cassette of this when I was a young kid (back in the 80s). They made a copy for me and my brother and we wore it out playing it every single night. To this day, I have the story memorized. Meryl Streep is a wonderful narrator and George Winston's beautiful, poignant music brings it to life. You simply cannot find a better version of this story. When the 20th Anniversary Edition came out, I snatched it up and was delighted to find that they put both narrated and un-narrated tracks on it. It's such a beautiful story! Both children and adults alike can enjoy it for many years.
I concur with another reviewer who wrote that no household should be without it!

Our family loves all of Bill Harley's CDs and books. Nothing passes the time quicker on a long car ride than listening to Bill's stories or songs. The five of us range in age from 5 to 40 and all enjoy!! This CD in particular is one of our favorites.

I checked this out from my library. I listened to it first to make sure it was okay to play for my four-and-a-half-year-old son. It was. He loved it. He goes around the house telling the bits he remembers. It's very cute. I would highly recommend this to any parent. Or any person wanting to hear 4 good folk tales well told.

Weiss comes highly recommended in homeschooling circles. Unlike one reviewer, I don't consider his voice to be "liquid gold" (for example, I prefer the sound of James Earl Jones) but it really is pleasant to listen to. I've heard samples of his voice before and wasn't overly impressed, given the glowing recommendations, but I found that his voice actually grew on me in this production. He voices characters pretty well, including women, but does not go really into character -- compared to his Prince & The Pauper (the only other complete recording of his that I've heard). And this truly is a recording that 5 year olds can comprehend and enjoy. The reason I gave this only four stars, though, is that I found his turn of phrase to be a bit awkward or not to my liking ...
