For most people, especially discerning classic music afficienados, they'd rather own the soundtrack with the entire suites included, than to own a compilation. This series by Telarc is an exception, since the performances, while not definative, are still spectacular. And being its a Telarc release, sound quality is always excellent.

Telarc has release a whole slew of these symphonic Sci-Fi themed CDs, and while all of them seem to have something to offer, they all fall short of feeling like a piece of art onto themselves. To me this is one of the greatest soundtracks ever produced. If you are a Star Wars fan then this is for you. This CD sounds great!! This is some of the most evocative, exciting and entertaining music in the history of movies. Like the movies themselves, this soundtrack will keep you on the edge of your seat, crying, laughing and smiling the entire time and brings to mind the images of the movies as if you were watching it while listening. This soundtrack belongs in your collection of Star Wars memorabilia. John Williams and the London Symphony have a masterpiece in this soundtrack and you will listen again and again enjoying it more each and every time you listen.

While this album of the soundtrack of the Star Wars trilogy made when people could still act includes many of my favorites, including March of the Ewoks, Forest Battle, Asteroid Field, and of course the infamous Main Theme, I was dejected to find that some very important chunks have been left out: Darth Vader's theme is nowhere to be found, except hidden as a few bars within the Imperial March. This is hardly satisfying to a fan like myself, whether or not that fan roots whenever the black cape appears. The fact is, if I had to choose between Fox's fanfare as track one (which lasts for 20 seconds and is ONLY the fanfare) and Vader's theme on the CD, I would opt for Vader. Reviewing the RCA/Victor 1997 "Special Edition" soundtrack of Return of the Jedi, one finds that it is the best soundtrack for the 1997 edition of the film, and perhaps the best soundtrack for Jedi overall. It gets five stars for the music, four for musical presentation, and five for packaging.

Nearly all of the music from the film is presented here, including some concert suites and diagetic Ewok music. However, a lot of the 1983 music is missing, including every version of Lapti Nek (there are at least three extant), every version of the Ewok song (two?), Jabba's suite, and all the original music from Max Rebo's Band (one or two cues). Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. This recording was made in 1947 and the recording quality reflects that. It sounds like the CD was made from a scratchy record with no clean up.

I have heard better Horowitz performances. This one is very mechanical, without much color or feeling.

I share the same disappointment with other reviewers, as it has nothing new than previous editions except which I really like the old original album artwork picture release. But personally, I do enjoy one music arrangement which is old first release: 1977, and 1980 release, because i feel they are in musical level and have ability to draw listener to another magination world, which was in fact Mr. George Lucas invention and intention I believe.
