I may be biased coming from New York and basically growing up with the first two, and best, Warzone records. I know NYHC was a scene unto itself, but hardcore branched out just as punk before it, metal after that, etc etc. This is STILL one of the greatest hardcore records, New York style or otherwise EVER! I say that in reference to the first record by far "Don't forget the Struggle." An absolute drilling, boot stompin classic just as relevant and fresh as "Age of Quarrel" by Cro-Mags, "Bad Brains", "Victim in Pain" by Agnostic and "Minor Threat." This is of course my opinion but true heads would agree, the early Warzone sound from 86-88 is just HYPE!! shredding guitars topped off by Raybeez legendary wails, howls and microphone blitz!!! I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD ... Read More:

EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.

Those of you with fond memories of Meco's cheesey but fun 1977 Disco version of Star Wars / Cantina Band may be a little dismayed by this latest collection. Gone is Meco's original 75 piece orchestra driven by Steve Gadd's four on the floor drumming to be replaced by a selection of lacklustre tunes that sound like they were created on a computer. There's nothing wrong with that approach as such but on this occasion the songs lack any real direction and the sound mix is surprisingly muddy.
What sounds like some original samples from the movie and some perfunctory stabs at impersonating the original actors by people who don't sound much like them are added to the tracks to liven them up (and remind us that we are listening to something Star ... Read More:

I love this CD. I knew I was going to love it too, I have most of these tracks on other Varese CDs, but this collection puts them all in one place and makes for a wonderful listening experience. You have tracks from the original soundtracks recordings for The Matrix, Starship Troopers, Total Recall and the Abyss. In addition there is a number of re-recoded tracks from other Varese compilations. the RSNO conducted by Joel McNeeley (Judge Dredd, Independence Day), John Debney (Back To The Future II), Stu Phillips (Battlestar Galactica) and Frederic Talgorn (Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Wars Episode 1). In addation there is a track from Alex North's rejected 2001 score performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. I ... Read More:

This was released about the same time as the Mehta/LA Philharmonic recording. Charles Gerhardt was an American working in London for many years as a conductor/producer. The "National Philharmonic" was his "pick-up" orchestra. Under the British system of free-lancers, I wouldn't be surprised if there were London Symphony veterans who played the on the soundtrack and on these sessions as well.
The standard is as high as Gerhardt's "Classic Film Scores". If fact, I think the original intention was to place "Star Wars" right with "The Adventures of Robin Hood", etc, and the classic scores of Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, etc.
It succeeds on every level. Wonderfully played and recorded, it offers a fine alternative to the soundtracks, ... Read More:

I found the title to this CD misleading because it made me believe that it included the original recordings by John Williams. Unfortunately that is not the case. This is 3rd party recordings of the classics, with LOTS of liberty taken, especially with the Cantina Band song. Personally I was disappointed in this CD, BUT the Star Wars fan that I bought it for LOVED it. And it was very reasonably priced.
