I owned this recording as a youngster during the Civil War Centennial (remember THAT?)and it was originally titled "JOHNNY REB AND BILLY YANK, A BALLAD OF THE NORTH AND SOUTH." The story of the war is told in a somewhat abstract way, by an American soldier who claims to be "all the American soldier boys that ever were, all wrapped up into one person." It is a good introduction for children, who might be inspired to learn more about this period. NOTE--"The Battle Cry of Freedom," which was on the original recording, is missing on the CD...I don't know why, unless it was to make room for the rather lame montage at the end. Also, it is the BANJO work that is done by Kirk Browne. The original recording gave credit ... Read More:

My addiction to the Red, or Soviet Army Chorus, started with seeing them in a post-Communism film, the name of which I can't even remember. But they sounded great, and I love Soviet kitsch. The idea of them singing American standards was just too much. Especially since on the first CD I'd purchased, "Soviet Army Chorus and Band", they already had had me rolling on the floor with "It's a Long Way to Tipperary".
This CD did NOT disappoint. Mind you, this is a group of very talented men. They are fun to listen to. It's odd to think of what they were putting up with back stage as they sang songs such as "Do the Russians Want War?" I'm not sure how much of the irony that hits me is simply that I don't expect our erstwhile cold war ... Read More:

This recent album "Ich war ein Berliner" is one of the best collections of orchestral and chamber music Sir James Galway has ever released. The selections on this album have been carefully chosen to fit every musical taste. The musicianship of EVERY musician on this album is nothing less than virtuoso performances...flawless playing. Sir James is at his best... This album would be a GREAT addition to every music listening library for every level of listener and from any genre ...I highly reccommend this album.
Release Date 1996
While I love the music of John Williams, it has nothing to do with the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and you have to wonder why such a title is given to a collection of Star Wars related pieces of music. So I don't know how to honestly rate this album: by the music which would get a good rating or the fact that the title is so misleading which would cause me to rate it low. So I roughly split the difference but only for that reason.

When the Tomita music hit the popular music stores in the early 1970's, synthesizers had been used, for the most part, as substitution for the "real" instruments. Isao Tomita's vibrant, truly musical use of his instrument reversed that erroneous impression for all who heard him. In the album, Extraterrestrial Classics, one is treated to the wild cacaphony of voices in the Mos Eisley Cantina and soothed with the crystalline spell of Claire de Lune. The music is sublime and silly, truly fantasy music for all ages. My children grew up on it, and my first old vinyl record was pilfered by a 9th grade student one day early in the 1990's. I am purchasing the old fantasy on a new CD just for myself....and because teaching a unit on wave ... Read More:

I picked this up here for under a dollar plus shipping!
This cd is great, re-recordings of famous cues from the first two star wars films, superman and a suite from the close encounters by The Boston Pops Orchestra with Williams conducting. Great companion for "Out Of This World" from the same label
