I recently received this as a present but I was already familiar with many of these recordings, having owned the complete versions of the works presented. Yes, these are great recordings but if you settle for this compilation you will be missing out big time on great music. I own Fennell's recording on the Holst suite--while the March from the suite is very good, you will miss out on the beautiful 'Song Without Words' and the 'Fantasia on the Dargason,' which are the seond and fourth movements of the suite, respectively. If you get the original CD from which this movement was taken you will be able to enjoy the wonderful playing of members of the Cleveland Orchsestra as they play Holst's First suite and a wonderful rendition of Handel's Fireworks ... The Science Fiction Album, Vol. 1

The entire first disc is available on other Silva America CDs, (at the time the star wars songs were the first release, but now they are on Music from the Star Wars saga), the rest on "Space and Beyond" "Space and Beyond 2: Alien Invasion", "The Cult Files" and "Battlestar Galactica A-Z of SciFi/Fantasy TV Themes". The re-recordings are cool but this is mainly a rehash of other cd's, as I said, the entire first cd is available on other Silva collections, and only 9 of the 15 tracks on cd 2 are not available on any other cd i own from Silva. (I don't have Cult Files re-opened or Space and beyond 3, who knows they might be on there)


Obviously, when this album was originally released, the main appeal was the newly recorded star wars ... Read More:

As a Northwest local I've had the pleasure of seeing Mr.Carroll play live on a number of occasions. He is not pretentious at all and manages to be a very touching storyteller through his music. This is moody music, taking the listener through a variety of stories and frames of reference, melodies both slow and fast, tender and very evil. His unusual voice and guitar playing are profoundly seductive. He reminds me a little of Leonard Cohen, but is thoroughly his own, weird, talented, unique self.He cites influences as varied as Springsteen, Townes Van Zandt, and Elie Weisel's "Night" trilogy.
I absolutely adore this guy and his music. Go see him play live if you can. Check out his website for upcoming show dates and music samples.

Battle Hymns: Songs of the Civil War

This is a set of Hollywood-type orchestral stylings of some
of the very greatest civil war hymns, whose vital messages --
their words -- are almost totally excluded. Marches are done in
slow time, keys are altered illogically, dynamic markings, etc.,
bear no relationship to the original, and two numbers are included which are not authentic music of the times. Orchestral
playing is occasionally sloppy. The digital recording (Canadian)
of what is presented is very good.

An unqualified disaster.

Lawrence Of Arabia: Original Soundtrack Recording - Newly Restored Edition

David Lean's epic film from 1962, "Lawrence of Arabia" is one of the big screen's finest achievements due in great part to the sweeping score writen by Maurice Jarre. Here is a match as close to perfect as I can imagine of spectacular visuals supported by stunning music, more than ably recorded for the Original Soundtrack release. For me, the listening experience was as enjoyable as viewing the film but after a few years, the soundtrack disappeared into vinyl memory. That is until I recently purchased the CD and to my suprise, Sir Adrian Boult's beautifully conducted score is as evocative and magical as ever. I hope you enjoy this music as much as I do.

Glenn Gould

Since I have praised Gould to the high heavens in my reviews and lists, I will limit my review here to pointing out that the "Gibbons/Byrd pairing" was a Gould favorite among his repertoire and that it is good to take note of other, non-Bach gems in his discography.

I heard Tim Duncan, the head of this project, several times on NPR and he stated that multiple Gould issues were planned in the great pianists series, but that CBS/Sony in the end chose to not make any of Gould's Bach recordings available to this project.

So if you feel like blaming someone here -and some Amazonians do- blame CBS/Sony and not Philips.
