Wow, this score brings a tear to a Trekkie's eye. It's beautiful, futuristic, haunting and most of all thematic and bold. Cliff Eidelman has proven he can compose with the likes of Horner and Goldsmith by writing and conducting a score that breaches beyond the everyday into the further reaches of musical immortality. If you love this score as much as I do, you will also love Horner's "Wrath of Khan" and perhap even more so Goldsmith's "Star Trek, The Motion Picture" or "Insurrection."

If listening to true Star Trek music hits you buttons in just the right way, you will need to add this score to your collection, it really is worth it.

Symphonic Suites from Star Trek

This music WAS used in STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES. There is a little confusion with respect to that point in the info printed inside the CD package where it is stated that this music "for one reason or another was never used." The outside back cover states that it "was never used in its entirety." Big difference. It's just that the three suites here have been assembled from ALL of the music composed for these specific episodes, so they include music which was cut from the finished product(s). The sessions were, from what I understand from the insert, supervised by the composers themselves.

I don't know if anyone realized, but this soundtrack is missing several pieces from the movie--just watch the movie and you'll know the ones that were left out. Thus this isn't an "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". The same thing was done with the Star Trek 2 soundtrack. Will James Horner ever bring out the complete ones? Who knows?

Looking at the title tracks, the program makes no sense. I mean does "The Sound Of Music" and "Star Wars" belong on the same disc? This is one of those slap it together compilations featuring archives from the DG, Phillips, Decca labels, or any combo of the three. What makes this attractive is the generally good(John Mauceri/Hollywood Bowl Orch.) performances of some things you might of missed out on. You know things that you don't want buy a complete soundtrack of. We get music from "The Omen" and "Dracula", both worth a listen. Theres the original Alex North, Fanfare from "2001" that was never used in the final cut of the film; one wonders how it would of been with his complete score rather than classics. I love this CD. I knew I was going to love it too, I have most of these tracks on other Varese CDs, but this collection puts them all in one place and makes for a wonderful listening experience. You have tracks from the original soundtracks recordings for The Matrix, Starship Troopers, Total Recall and the Abyss. In addition there is a number of re-recoded tracks from other Varese compilations. the RSNO conducted by Joel McNeeley (Judge Dredd, Independence Day), John Debney (Back To The Future II), Stu Phillips (Battlestar Galactica) and Frederic Talgorn (Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Wars Episode 1). Star Trek Voyager: Main Title

Whenever I need a little bit of inpiration, I just play my Voyager theme single. It reminds me of the bravery of the crew of the Enterprise. It also reminds me how brave today's astronauts are. I enjoyed the main title song so much that I have used it as an example for a signal filtering assignment in my class at Colorado State University. I have asked my students to perform a number of matlab tests and apply filters upon this signal. I think it will inspire my students to succeed so they may one day help mankind reach the stars.
